Predicted study score - teachers sent to VCAA ?
« on: October 09, 2017, 05:12:54 pm »

Hey everyone,

I just have a question regarding what teachers send to VCAA.
I have heard that teachers send in a predicted study score to VCAA and was wondering what this is based of trail exams or only sac scores? Since the trail exams are company based some students do have access to the trail exams that they will sit which results in false results and causing me a bit of concern if these scores have any value. Also will the marks of the trial exam be sent to VCAA ?

Thank you soo much.

What teachers send are indicative grades of each student on what they think that student will receive on the exam. However this is determined is up to the teacher, but I doubt they base everything off a trial exam, and more likely base it off how the student has been performing all year.

School trial exams have nothing to do with VCAA, so no, they will not be sent but they can be used to assist the teacher in determining the abilities of students.

repsonse above is correct

Your teacher won't send a predicted study score but only a predicted grade i.e. A+
Trial exams may have somewhat of an impact of this grade, some teachers use trial exams to sort out rankings, whilst ethically questionable (and fundmanentally incorrect) it's a good system if they want the cohort to do overall better (although some peoples scores may be lowered).
Different teachers will do different things, my methods teacher was very transparent and said his predicted grades was a combination of sac averages and trial exam scores correlated to previous years grade distribution whilst others teachers (english) didn't talk about it much.

Hey sine,

I really thought rankings could not be changed and they were purely based on Sac scores it wouldnt make sense for teachers to actually count trial exams that are available to students. Could you please clarify ?

Thanks

Supposed to be based on only SACs, but some teachers don’t necessarily follow the rules... but that being said, it wouldn’t have a significant impact on the mark, so let them do what they think is best :)

basically what mtDNA said :P

I personally don't think this is a bad thing considering it's usually relatively easier to do well on sacs (and rankings aren't always "correct" especially if the sacs are super easy ) but it's obviously dodgy for anyone who is good at acing sacs but isn't good in the overall subject and trial exams.

Just note that there's probably a strong correlation between higher SAC scores and higher exam grades. The majority of teachers have taught many students in the past so they do have an indication of how SAC scores have correlated to exam grades in the cohort (which they would probably use to predict grades). If the SACs in a particular subjects in the school is easier to get higher grades on than the exam, teachers would take that into a account and vice versa.

Might be off-topic, but what's the purpose of this?

Does it affect anything?

If you receive a exam grade or more grade brackets lower than your predicted (A+ to  B+, A to B), a remark of your exam is  automatically triggered.

The trial exam can also be used to split rankings. For example, if 3 people are sitting on rank 1 after all SACs are completed they would use the trials exam to separate the students. It may seem unfair but it's better than sharing a rank with someone, because if one person bombs the exam it could drag the score of the other person's SAC component down, as VCAA takes the average exam score of all students sitting on the rank.
