This indeed seems to be a tricky question! I don't think this is solvable with the knowledge expected in VCE - could be wrong though  :P
Is this from a practise exam? Are there any solutions provided?

Hey, I did end up solving in. Btw this is mm 1 & 2,

2(4^a+1) 16^2a
4^1/2 = 2
Therefore,

4^1/2(4^a+1) = 4^4a - same as 16^2
4^a+1+1/2= 4^4a
4a^3/2= 4a
4a-a=3/2
3a=3/2
a=3/2X1/3
a=1/2.
