Hi I wanted to ask see if your rank is 4th you get around the 4th highest mark in the HSC exam as your external what if he gap between forth and 5th is 0.2% but the gap in the HSC exam for the 4th and 5th highest mark is like 3 marks even in 5th got higher does 4th still take it or do they get moderated according to the 0.2%
Thanks

Hey! I'm having a little trouble understanding the scenario you've put forward, but you can picture moderation (in a super simple sense) as taking the bell curve of exam marks, and sliding it up/down to be in the same spot as the bell curve of assessment marks. So if the difference in exam marks is small, the difference in moderated marks will be small :)

Hi jamon so a while ago I read you're reply to someone which said if your ranked 4th internally you get around the 4th highest HSC external mark what I meant to say what if the gap is very small between 4th and 5th internally but externally there is a big gap does 4th stilll get the 4th highest external as they internal even if they never come 4th so if 5th gets higher then 4th by 5 marks does 4th take the higher mark and 5th the lower even if that person got better  or does the marks just get moderated according to the gaps
Thanks

So it gets mapped to the internal performance - if 4th and 5th are close internally they will be close after moderation. And yes, even if fifth gets a higher mark than fourth in the exam, fourth places mark will moderate to be higher than theirs because that’s the ranking order

Hi Jamon sorry for annoying you but I have one more question this was because I am suppose to be 4th but the gap was 0.1% so for example
Harry 79%
Vic 78.8%
External
Harry 75%
Vic 80%
Does vic Harry take the 80% as his internal and vie the 75 or does it only get moderated according to the gap and the years average so the final difference will be small
Thank you

Final difference will be small - But exactly where they go would depend on the rest of the cohort :)
