Frankenstein and Antigone

Just wondering, for those who are planning to do one or both of these as their texts for the exam at the end of the year

we can bounce off interpretations in this thread.

these are my major interpretations of these two texts:

Frankenstein : Mary Shelley is trying to urge her readers about the importance of companionship

Antigone: Sophocles uses the character, Antigone to convey where true duty lies. Whether it may be with the divine laws of heaven or the laws of man.

Antigone's duty lies with the laws of heaven as she appeals to divine law in order to justify her defiance against Creon and the state. In many scenes Antigone draws on words of authority from religion, sincerely believing that she is obeying the "unalterable laws of the Gods", and that these laws overpower Creon's mortal edicts.

nice, you did lit last year and still remember? man pro!

may i ask how hard is it to get a 30 study score in lit? as people at my school say it's really hard but it's only a 30.. as in an avg. can't be that much of a difficult task

To an extent, Antigone and Creon are both "right." Antigone is doing what she has to do to fulfil her role as a sister, and to please the gods, and Creon is doing what he has to do to keep peace in the kingdom. I know that doesn't sound very sophisticated but you get the idea.

Well, it really depends on your ability i guess. It depends how strong your class is and where you are ranked and how well you perform on the exam. And you're right, the average study score is 30. If you look at the grade distribution, for semester 1 and 2 sacs the median mark was a B+ and for the exam it was a B, so if you got roughly around these marks you would be looking at about a 30.

Here is the grade sistribution for last year to give you an idea of what sort of numerical marks correspond to each letter grade (remember that the scores are doubled).

Yes that is true. It can be seen that Sophocles is contrasting the two sisters. We have Antigone, who is defiant and fighting for what she believes in, ignoring her "place" (she is a woman and considering the historical context of the play this would have been extremely controversial at the time) and following divine law. Then on the other hand we have Ismene, who subordinates herself to Creon's mortal law, and does not wish to act out of her place for fear of punishment.

thanks for the link! i just added my whole year's score and i'm only sitting on a high B.
well yeah maybe obtaining a 30 would be difficult as our school's lit proformance is shocking
as half of the class barely pass and no one has ever gotten a A+ before.. :/

Try not to let that bother you. Just do your absolute best on the exam and your study score shouldn't suffer too much. If your class lifts for the exam, you may find your sacs get moderated up, so they are higher.

You need at least 50 posts before you can karma. Once you're at 50 the karma button will automatically appear. :)
