Concurrent diploma online?

Hi

I am probably studying Commerce with a focus on Actuarial Science at University of Melbourne this year. I was thinking of doing a concurrent diploma alongside my degree (thinking of IT or marketing etc.) but doing it at Melbourne would probably add an extra year which is not appealing. Does anyone have experience studying another diploma online while in university so that extra time is not added? Thanks

In a general sense, I think that your uni degree itself will be extremely time consuming. I would not add a diploma to the current workload as you'll be managing two separate courses rather than one. Not to mention the added cost.... best check that the diploma is covered under HECS (via CSP)

If you still REALLY want to, the best scenario would probably be part-time, 1 subject per semester.

Cost is no issue. I could go to Bond University and pay 400k for a medical degree if I wanted to study Medicine, if I wanted to.

A diploma part-time outside university is feasible right? Surely it's still less workload than my buddies doing an actuarial and commerce double degree at Monash?

Both your Bachelor of Commerce, and your friends' Commerce/Actuarial Science would typically have a standard workload of 4 units per semester. Despite it being a double degree, you'll be having the same workload (ignoring the fact that some units are harder, etc.). Doing a part-time diploma (1 unit/semester) will mean you are essentially completing 5 units a semester. Many students in first year struggle to cope with 4 units a semester, and choose to drop to 3.

If you're keen to do the diploma, then I would recommend holding off on it for at least a semester. This way, you'll be able to see what a standard workload looks like, and judge as to whether you'll be able to take on an extra unit

Solid advice. I'll revisit this in a semester. HOWEVER, if someone has any insightful knowledge and experiences relating to studying a concurrent diploma outside of university, please share
