Improving Translation

Hey Guys,
I have been completing some translation exercises however most of my translated answers do not fit the model answer. Some examples include punctuation at different places and different synonyms used. Although most of my meaning is generally conveyed, my teacher said it's  best to have a translated piece that should be very similar to the answer. I was just wondering if there's a way of improving translation other than constant practice?
