Engineering Question

Hi!

I got a 29 raw in Specialist Maths and I was wondering if I should do ENG1090 Foundation Maths.
I know you need ≥30 but I asked Monash University if it is required to graduate and this is the response I got:

"Thank you for your email.

It is not a requirement for graduation. However, Maths study would prepare you well for your specialisation study, especially if you would like to study Electrical and computer system, Mechanical and Mechatronics engineering in the future.

We also notice that most of students who do not have strong Maths background would struggle with study from level two, so it is highly recommended that you enrol in Foundation maths ENG1090.

If we can help you any further, please update this enquiry."

The reason I dont want to do it is because I will have to overload next year as the Mobile Apps unit is moved to Year 2.

Thanks

Not an engineering student, but honestly I think it would depend on how confident you are in your maths knowledge. Did you struggle in VCE Spesh? Perhaps you would be able to do some review of spesh content in the few weeks before uni starts?

If you're not confident in your knowledge basis from VCE Spesh, I would recommend considering completing ENG1090. If you were to become overwhelmed and unable to keep up in ENG1005, you could end up failing the unit, and have to repeat it anyway. Even though skipping ENG1090 might save you an overload in second year, you might find yourself taking on extra work in first year, due to the potential difficulty of ENG1005. First year is often considered the most difficult by many students, as they find it difficult to adjust quickly to the different environment. I'm not saying these things will apply specifically to you, but these are things you will need to consider.

Something else you might be able to do is enrol in ENG1090 in first year, and if you're able to cope, stick with it. Otherwise, you can change over to ENG1090 before the census date.

Again, I'm not an engineering student, but hopefully I've been able to give you some things to think about. Hopefully there are some engineering students around these forums who might be able to give an insight into ENG1090, and how it relates to ENG1005.

Hope this helped, and good luck :)

Nah don't do the foundation unit. Back in the day (2013, sh*t I feel old) I got 30 in spesh and did MTH1030, equivalent of ENG1091 or whatever it is called these days.
