CURIE

Hey all!  ;D
Was just wondering if anyone has participated in CURIE last year.
I just got an email yesterday night and I wasn't entirely sure of what to expect even after reading what they offered.
From what I gather, it's a undergraduate research initiative.
Would be cool hearing the experiences of others so I could make a more informed decision.
Any response would be much appreciated.

Hey KCrimson!

Welcome to ATAR Notes. ;D

CURIE was established just after I left Monash, but I've heard good things about it. I also know a couple of people who I believe who were involved in setting it up, and it definitely looks interesting to me.

I was, however, involved with ICUR (the International Conference of Undergraduate Research), which I believe is at least affiliated with CURIE. That was a really great experience and I'd recommend it to anybody, so if that's anything to go by, I'd say it's definitely worth checking it out! :)

Hey Joseph41!   :)

Thanks for the welcome and response :D
Ah, I see. I did remember seeing it was newly established.
That's great to hear. I'll be sure to check it out then as it does sound interesting.

Got the email yesterday as well seems to be a few different aspects to the program, the invitational seminar on the 15th should provide more information - at least for me the winter unit ATS2290/ATS3290 looks pretty interesting.

Hey, no worries at all. Hope to keep seeing you around here! :D How's Biomed treating you?

More broadly, though, this is the sort of opportunity I'd actively avoid in my first couple of years at uni, and actively take up in my last couple of years. I ended up enjoying uni way more when I was more involved, and I don't think it was a coincidence!

Yes, I probably will attend the seminar, just to get more clarification but the winter unit did catch my eye also.
Seems like a pretty cool opportunity.  :)

I also got this email, might attend the seminar to find out more info but I don't think I can really take advantage of the program as my degree doesn't even have electives, let alone free electives.

Haha thank you. I've always gone on the forum but I've never really posted. Biomed's pretty cool and I like the units they offer up as core, though they can just dump a fair amount of material on you within the span of a lecture. It's just a matter of keeping up to date and knowing what to know, as it is with every course, I guess.  ;D

It does make sense to take it up in later years as I guess you would be more settled into uni and you do want to have some degree of fun in your first few years. I just thought I may as well see if I'd like to do it this year or next as my undergrad is only 3 years. Funnily enough, I'm trying to get more active in uni life and see where it takes me. Hope I don't have to compromise too much time :P

Hello all,

As a student who has been heavily involved in CURIE for the past year hopefully I can shed some light on what the centre is all about.

Established in 2017 The Centre for undergraduate research excellence and Initiatives is a platform for Monash undergraduate students to test the waters of academic research through participation in workshops, mentoring programs and associated conferences, such as ICUR. In summary, CURIE aims to help students gain exposure to a community of global undergraduate researchers by encouraging cross-cultural collaboration through interdisciplinary and international research teams.

I have had the pleasure of being involved in the Compass Research Networks program as a mentee and later as a mentor in 2017. I have also partaken in the Global Leadership and Advanced Research Program (An intensive winter unit where students are placed in Intentional and or domestic research groups and learn how to work together to apply for research funding)

I would encourage any student to participate in the CURIE initiatives and programs to not only improve their research capabilities, but gain valuable employability skills, such as cross-cultural communication, which is a vital component for the rapidly developing global job market.

To learn more please see their events page for more details and attend the upcoming 'Information evening

Thank you for your insight Darcy!  :)
I'll be sure to attend the Information Evening as I am now very interested in the program.
Love the fact that they're running workshops and seminars about research also. I'll also consider doing the winter unit as a possible elective.
Hopefully, the program will help me understand what is required in taking a career in research.
Cheers.

Hi Darcy (and everyone else in this forum :D),

Regarding ATS2290/3290, could you please shed some light on the teaching methods (e.g: lectures, tutorials) & assignments (e.g: intensity, word count, and exercises) for this winter unit? I'm from the Malaysia campus & the unit is taught here online as opposed to on-campus; was wondering if there would be any difference between the two. What did the assignments consist of? Were online students required to watch any lectures and such? I actually planned a short vacation (in Melbourne!) during the EXACT timeframe that the unit runs for, so I was wondering if that would hamper the possibility of taking the unit since I would be busy during the day. Our info session on CURIE is only happening later this month and I'm contemplating taking this unit and dropping one of the units I'm taking this semester.

Any info is greatly appreciated!

Cheers :)
