Confused ancient student!!!

Hi! One of my biggest struggles with ancient history is not knowing how much I should know - there's a fine line between not enough information on a dot point and going overboard with info that you most likely won't use in a response. I recognise that there is no definite number but I would like to know roughly where I should be sitting.

So I was wondering (roughly) how many of each is it recommend that we know in detail and really familiarise ourselves with:

- How many villas should we know? I currently have 2 from Pompeii and 2 from Herculaneum - is this okay???
- How many houses should we know?
- How many temples should we know? I currently have 3 from Pompeii and none from Herculaneum (I don't think there are any from Herc)
- How many shops should we know? I only have Aselenia's Tavern - I can't find any others  :-[
- There's only one basilica right? The one in Pompeii's Forum??

Sorry for all the questions. Thank you sooooo much for your help!  :)

Hey! There is no definite answer as you said, and you should always aim to know as much as you can. If worst came to worst, knowing one for Pompeii and one for Herculaneum from each would be enough to get by. Not ideal, but you could probably get away with it. However I think you are going about studying for Ancient in the wrong way, or well, not the easiest way.

Rather than trying to know A LOT about every dot point, try and learn some, that relate to A LOT of dot points :) Pick sources that can work with other sections of the syllabus as well. For example, you could use the Temple of Isis from Pompeii to talk about a range of things, from religion, foreign cults, Egyptian influence (and greek influence), evidence for the eruption, social life (role of women + slaves). Try and find those kinds of sources than the uber specific ones, then try and roughly have 1-2 sources for both Pompeii and Herculaneum from each dot point from these really versatile sources!

Hope this helps,

Susie

Yup! That's how we are being taught to make our study notes. I already have Aselina's Tavern as an example for women, occupations, food and dining and public buildings. It's just I wasn't sure if just that one source would be enough for one dot point. And you're right, I am using the Temple of Isis for a range of dot points but I just wondered if it would be enough to say answer a question on religion - personally, I think the answer is no, you should aim to have at least 3 temples in a religion response - therefore it would be correct to have 3 temples under the religion dot point? (that you can then obviously use for other dot points)

Also, how does the Temple of Isis fall under evidence of the eruption?

So, basically what I gathered from your response is that you should have around 4 buildings, temples, baths etc for each.

Thanks again.

Fantastic! Yep thats basically what I'm saying.

It falls under evidence for the eruption, because it was one of the only buildings repaired after the 62AD earthquake (which many believe was a prelude to the eruption) :)

Ok great, thanks so much!

One last question ahah, have you uploaded your study notes to atarnotes? I would just like to see an example of how others who have done really well in ancient history have laid out and formatted their study notes (because with the crossing over of sources for various dot points, it can get quite confusing). If not that's completely fine,  :) but do you know if there are any exemplar study notes uploaded to atarnotes that really demonstrate that?

Thanks!!

I actually didn't write any notes during the HSC! However you can find ones that I wrote specifically for ATAR Notes here :)

I also recommend Stephanie Azzopardi's notes in the notes section! They are fantastic :)

I also uploaded my detail table to the notes section here which showed all the written and archeological evidence that I had for the HSC (some of the dot points probably had too much info though!).

Would definitely recommend Susie and Stephanie Azzopardi's notes as well!! They were really helpful last year!  ;D
