Hello everyone
I just finished my mid year exams and got my results back. Did fairly well in most of my subjects except for chemistry, which I got 54%.

I'm planning to change to another subject as I do not plan to do any science degree at uni, and if I change my mind later, I still have physics. The problem is that I don't know what subject I can change to as there are many subjects that I don't like, and there still a few that I'm not sure about. The subjects that I don't like at all are all subjects related to Art and Media, Accounting, Politics and Economics.

I was thinking about changing Chemistry for Business Management, but I did some investigation and it's very definition heavy subject and doesn't scale very well.
So right now I'm feeling worse than my exam weeks as if I don't make a change now, I don't think I'll have many options at the beginning of Year 12, and I don't think that my marks will get any better next year.
The subjects available are in the following links:

PD: i got to Westbourne Grammar School, not sure if this is important, but just in case.

Hey man, just going off on what sdfg said above, one bad exam mark doesn't really mean a lot in the long run. I failed chem 1/2 in year 11 and legit had to bribe/beg my teacher to let me stay for 3/4, and now I'm averaging in the high B+ range and has even been told by my teacher (who tried to make me drop it last year) to aim for a 40 study score. So I'd encourage you to consider keeping the subject, cos I swear (based on my experiences) sooner or later it'll click.

I have friends at Westbourne (fellow westie here lol), from what I've been told your chem cohort is pretty strong compared to other schools in the area, and being in a strong cohort can obviously give the impression of being weaker at the subject, but they could boost your SAC marks in the end.

As for what subject to go into if you were to actually drop chem, obviously I don't really know anything about you so I can't give any solid advice, but I know a few classmates who dropped chem at the start of year 12 for bio or further and they really enjoy it, so maybe that could be an option if you aren't doing them already.

Hey there, welcome to ATARNotes.

Before you go ahead and switch out, consider if you're making this decision because you genuinely hate chem and can't stand the subject, or because of that one bad exam score. If it's the later, I would seriously reconsider before going ahead. Chem is a really important subject in terms of university pre-requisites and dropping it means closing a lot of doors for what you can do at university. You can pick it up again in year 12 if you change your mind by then but it'll be substantially harder than if you didn't drop it at all.

Also, you have the rest of the year and next year too to improve your chem mark - one chem mark, let alone one in year 11, doesn't defined what study score you get at the end of year 12. And learning how to improve and showing resilience after a crappy situation is an essential skill to do well next year (and in life, for a matter of fact).

Just my 2 cents, though (sorry for the unsolicited advice :P). It's your choice - drop chem if you want to - but please do consider what I've just said! :)

I don't hate chemistry, but it's too hard for me. Although I can understand all the topics taught in class, do many practice exams before exams and review a lot, I still get bad marks. My only hope is to end up with a raw score of 20, which I think is achievable, but I was thinking to switch to another subject, as I think if I pura the same effort, I can get higher marks

I'm not sure if next year will "click", but if it doesn't, then I'll will be waiting for a raw score of 20, which I think is achievable.

Like I said above, I'm considering subjects such as bio, but I'm not 100% sure if I want to. Gonna talk to my career counselor, and see what he says

Irony here is that I had a really similar situation. I actually enjoyed chemistry somewhat, but I was terrible at it. I wound up doing just fine (I did a little better than average) and did reasonably enough overall in VCE (uh, 90+ ATAR from recollection). I also now have a minor in chemistry, so... yeah, things worked out just fine for me.

If you're intending on doing medicine and some fields, you'll be closing those doors, as Sdfg said. But the good news is that there aren't actually that many areas that require VCE chemistry as a prereq. Off the top of my head, there's undergrad med, biomed and maybe some engineering (chemical engineering) and health sciences, so if you're not interested in those, then it might be time to consider the move. What sort of area are you intending to delve into post-VCE?

If you're interested in my experiences, please feel free to PM me.

I'm not intending doing medicine or any area related to it as I don't have any interest. A month back I talked to my career counselour and discussed what career I could persue at uni as I didn't (and still not sure) what career I want to follow, as I never developed any interest in any field. Information Technology seems something I might want to persue, but not quite sure as I don't have any coding or programming knowledge. I spoke to my career counselour today again and he sugested me to change to environmental science and it is easier compared to other sciences. Probable gonna do that, drop Chemistry and switch to Environmental science
