I haven't been doing so well this year, I feel like I need a break from school and I'm pretty anxious at the moment :P

I was wondering how to get back on track? I'm pretty annoyed at myself, I feel like I've let myself down. I've worked really hard the past few years being in accelerated programs (SEAL program, so I do have the pretty unlikely option to go back with the class of 2019),  however now I'm living with the consequences of extreme burnout haha

Two questions?
Any ways to get back on track so I can end up with an alright ATAR? The subjects I ended up picking are going to be mostly scaled down...
Is there any other ways (without ATAR) to get into Visual Communication Design degrees at RMIT and Billy Blue or Marine Biology at Deakin?

Hey, totheforest,

Firstly, well done getting this far! You've been working hard - don't give up on your dreams just yet. And don't be too hard on yourself if you haven't quite been reaching your goals. Year 12 is hard on everybody, and right now, at the end of the semester, is a time when almost every student feels run-down and anxious, or unmotivated. You can still get into the courses you want.

Your first chance is just giving yourself a bit of a break, with plenty of rest and a little bit of fun. Just work to holidays. Give yourself a goal, a countdown you can look at. Then give yourself a couple day's-a week's break before knuckling down again. When suffering burnout, your body is telling you it needs a break. So by giving it a short respite after you get through this one last week, you're helping yourself work much more productively later on, if you have the self-control to pick it up again.

- It doesn't matter if you picked subjects that scale down. As long as you work hard and do your best in everything, you'll do well. Just doing your best is what matters right now. The exams are still out there, and if you're stressed about your ATAR, they're your chance to really pull it up!

- If you do end up missing the ATAR and don't get accepted, that doesn't matter. Universities offer pathway courses, where you can get into a course with a lower ATAR requirement and then transfer to the course you originally wanted if you're doing a decent job. I had a friend who wanted to do physiotherapy and didn't make the ATAR. She applied to a pathway course and then, a year later, ended up in her dream course anyway.

- If you completely bomb it and your life is ruined and you accidentally set fire to your exam papers and your dog pees on your application forms and everything that could possibly go wrong goes wrong, you will always still have the chance to apply to the course as a mature age student, or you could come back to school in 2019, as you said.

There's always a route for you to take, so don't stress too much. It might take a little longer, but if it's what you really want, you'll get there in the end.
Why not talk to your school's careers counselor about your worries? They'll definitely be able to help you find alternative pathways and put your mind at ease. :)
Thoughts are only thoughts.
They are not you. You do belong to yourself,
even when your thoughts don't.

Poet replied before I could. Just wanted to add on this little tidbit.

If I remember correctly, Design degrees at RMIT are based on  portfolios and getting a 25 in English or equivalent. (Check your degree on Coursearch or via RMIT’s site.) You still need to get a good ATAR but it’s second to your portfolio.

Marine biology, I think, has multiple pathways. Only direct entry requires ATAR. You could easily take an alternative pathway that’ll let you hop back into marine bio courses soon enough.
