i do GMA but i don't want to do specialist...is it too late to do Further? Have I missed too much in General Maths to do Futher? How relevant is Futher to General Maths?

I'm not sure about GMA but with Methods, the only things that are relevant are:

1.  Standard deviation and the 68-95-99.7% rule.
2.  If you do Graphs and Relations then Methods does help.

Otherwise the maths in Further is pretty much completely different from Methods and Spesh.

Hey there,

I did GMA, then moved onto Specialist and I'm also doing Further Mathematics this year (skipped yr 11 general maths), so I can definitely help you out here.

Things that you do in GMA, that may help you with Further (if you plan on changing):
- Matrices
- Solving linear equations... (i.e simulatenously...)
- Sequences and Series
- Simple of graphs ()
- Ratios and Similarity
- Trigonometry & Geometry (angles of depression, elevation, 3D problems, bearings...)
- Describing the distribution of a single variable
- Investigating the relationship between two numerical variables

Please note that these topics only relate if you or your school chooses to do that particular module. I'm just showing you overlaps between the two subjects. i.e Further is a module based subject with Statistics as the core (compulsory module) + 3 of 5 modules (Linear, Matrices, Networks, Number Patterns or Geometry/Trigonometry)
Furthermore, when you did your GMA course, your teacher may not have covered the whole book (like in my case), and so some bits we didn't even do, because the teacher knew we didn't need it for spesh, and so covered the things we did need to know, in more depth, and skipped topics that weren't so relevant (however could be relavant for further).

In my opinion though, Further is quite a straight forward subject, especially when you've done higher maths, and so learning it from scratch may be even more interesting (sitting in class) rather than sitting there bored, listening to material you already know. :)

General Maths LEADS to Further so its very relevant.

I did General, and now I do Further, and a lot of what we did in General (like 80%) is in Furtehr

For example
         geometry
         Linear Modelling
         Data and statistics (core)
         Ratios

So practically everything I did in General we did in Further....although you would EASILY be able to do furtehr w/o having done general.

sorry, I didn't read properly, you are talking about General Maths ADVANCED.

Same situation here. You should be fine, plenty of students went from GMA to Further in the past and will in the future.
Hmm...next year already. Well better set my goals and all...(raw)

You won't miss out on anything, though I think you have slight advantages if you do the GMA/GMB course in the previous year. Whilst some of the concepts are used in both, you will relearn them again, so don't stress too much mate.
