Questions about uni from a HSC student

Hey,

So I'm currently in Year 12 and planning on uni in 2019.

I was looking into studying law & journalism or law & international studies (majoring in international relations) and was wondering if anyone who is currently studying these degrees could give me an outline of it? e.g. if they're enjoying the course, what uni they are at, potential job prospects in this field etc?

Would greatly appreciate it x

Hey there,
I'm obviously not a uni student studying media but I do know UTS is really good when it comes to media: journalism, law, international studies. If you look at some of the moderators here who do media (e.g. Susie, Elyse, dancing phalanges) all of them do media at UTS. I remember asking dancing phalanges why UTS and they mentioned that UTS is really good with media. You can find some subject reviews on journalism in UTS here.

Hope this helps!

Hey!

I'm a first-year International Studies and Media student at UNSW. :-)

1. Outline of course
Components of BInSt: core subjects, minor (or major in International Business), language, year-long exchange, electives
Components of Media: core subjects (depends on major), media electives, free electives

If you do both International Studies and Media, or any double degree your electives are cut down a bit. You can check out the handbook here. And for any other handbook just google something like "international studies and law handbook" and it should come up.

2. Do I enjoy the course?
Yes, yes and yes! I love it. Learning a language is awesome, the content is interesting (albeit dry at times) and there's not as many contact hours compared to other courses. Obviously there are a few downers - I have a few friends who do law and they hate the amount of readings they have to do, media theory especially at UNSW is really dry, generally very content-heavy subjects but it's easy to look past the negatives when there's so much stuff to like. If you want to look at some subject reviews I did for this semester, they're here.

3. Job prospects
With BInSt you could honestly do anything. Do you want to work in the UN? BInSt is a great way to do that! Do you want to work in an NGO? BInSt is awesome. Do you want to do something communications-related? The language skills you gain are invaluable for that because you can work overseas! If you add in Media or Law, it broadens your job prospects because you've got another field under your belt.

Hope this helps!!
