No worries! I completely understand. To avoid them being taken down again (we'll be doing methods exam 2, the specialist exams, chemistry and physics as well), how should I show in future posts that they're in fact our solutions?

Going to reply to this here and derail the discussion, but as long as you acknowledge in the post that they're yours we shouldn't delete them (which you did do, I just didn't read your post completely). All in all very much a dopy currently-post-exam moderator. Thanks a lot for your help and understanding :)

Sorry mate, I took them down. We've been really disappointed by the constant breaches of copyright on the exam discussion threads and thought that yours was another. Many apologies for taking the solutions down. I'll try to restore them so that everyone here can benefit from your excellent work.

Last year, a copy of the exam was posted in the very first message in the thread within minutes of every math exam. No one complained then. What changed?

Appreciate the question - definitely does seem inconsistent, and we should have made this clear sooner. We've since changed our policy and won't be uploading exams as per this post. Please contact me privately if you have any further questions/issues regarding this - we'll keep this thread for exam discussion. :)

Anyway with that lovely example of dopey modding over, we've put back up the methods answers!!!

Holy fk that exam was an absolute massacre.
I got 9pi^2 - 36pi for that last question and realised too late that it was negative...

The utter absence of statistics and composite function - related questions was actually disgusting.

Also can anyone explain to me why for that inverse function question, you had to reject the negative answer? I thought you have to leave the plus-or-minus sign in there.

Final question, what grade would a 27~29/40 be on that exam?

Cheers.
I reckon I got around 28-29/40 as well. Based on previous years that will get you a low A. I reckon this year's was much harder than previous years (I've done extensive practice and error correcting), so it might be more of a mid A this year.

Thanks for posting your solutions, too, crouchie! :)
You're welcome. It was a lot of fun to type up, and to see dantraicos do something similar too.
Well-typeset maths is just gorgeous to look at, isn't it?

Haha, yeah, MathType is great. I was thinking of doing it in LaTeX but thought I'd stick to the style of all the other TWM Publications stuff.

The graph was done in Microsoft word. Insert chart, scatter with smooth lines. Because I write exams, I've memorised the VCAA style guide :P

Here's a link to a word doc containing just the graph for you to analyse :D

Thanks for that Dan. That graph has so many components to it, I'd never get to that level. It's literally a bunch of lines, dashes etc put together to create that. I wish I had the patience to smash that out, but I use FX Graph to do all that (though the results just aren't as pretty as yours)  ;)

It isn't too much work once you know VCAA's style guide, but it is an incredibly steep learning curve. It took me all of the summer holidays to get right. Today, that figure took me just under 20 minutes to make. Microsoft Word does all the axes, gridlines and graph part. I just put in the axes numbers :)

Hi,

For question 7, part a) was worth 3 marks, my thinking was correct, however due to a silly error in finding the derivative I did not end up with the correct coordinate. I then used the incorrect coordinate for the next question (worth 2 marks). Does consequential marking have an effect here? Will I pick up maybe 1-2 marks in the 3 mark part at least? Or will my score for that question be 0/5?

Thanks in advance  :)

Also, huge thanks to the multiple people who posted up solutions, much appreciated!

You can only get consequential marks for method marks, so as long as your distance formula (with the wrong coordinates) was correct, you'll get a mark there.

As for the first part, you would lose the answer mark, but as long as you showed use of the chain rule and obtained a value from setting the derivative to 0, then you should get 1 or 2.

Does anybody know the mark allocation for each question? Trying to see how I went but the solutions don't say how much each question was worth. Thanks
