I think it all depends on luck amongst many other factors. Some people have the ability to retain whatever information they learn in class. Some people over time have developed great writing skills that help them. Luck plays a big role in it too.

Well if you think about it, an exam is just a few questions that must be answered in a given time frame. That's pretty much it. If you answer the questions, you get the marks and if you don't, well, you don't get the marks. VCAA doesn't give you marks based on how much you study, they base it off how well you can answer the exam (which apparently should be indicative of how much one studies). Some people can answer the exam questions because it happens to be the ones they know how to answer. Some people may have studied a lot, but maybe didn't emphasise studying the parts of the study design which unfortunately were the ones the exam placed a lot of emphasis on. So all in all, I would say luck.
