Hey guys,

would it be ideal to memorise each term in the text book for the biology exam? Do the definitions have to be exactly worded the way the text book wants it, or can you simply create your own with key vocab to make it simpler for you to understand?

Also... in terms of the definition for the mitochondria, what is the best one? (please nobody say powerhouse of the cell  ;D)

Thanks

Definitely no need to memorise all the terms in the textbook. A lot of the textbook is irrelevant to the course but it's worthwhile having a working definition for anything you have covered (doesn't have to be word for word as long as it incorporates all the aspects) - a lot of the time understanding is enough to produce a definition on the spot.

Mitochondria: site of aerobic respiration resulting in ATP production (but you could go into more detail if you wanted to)

Nah definitely no need to memorise the definitions. It's unlikely that you'll actually be asked to define terms except for either in the multiple choice or you'll be given information and then you'll get a question, for example you'll have a diagram of a cell with arrows pointing to different structures within the cell and the question might be 'what is the role of structure X' or something like that. It won't be like 'Define these terms; mitohondria, chloroplast, endocytosis, immunity, etc.'

They don't need to be worded exactly correctly - but they do need to refer to key terms. For mitochondria, you'd need to say something about it being the site of anaerobic respiration, but it doesn't really matter how you word it.

Edit: Sine beat me to it, but extra answers can't hurt :P
