I did a piece on this. To get you started, one 'real-life' example I talked about was how some people who start feeling confusion about their sexual orientation deny these ideas. Their belonging is compromised since they may not relate to hetrosexuals due to this change in psyche, and may not relate to homosexuals since they don't embrace this new identity.

One can also consider the flip side, having strong relationships and connections with others can also strengthen and discovery many aspects of individual identity that many may not know exist.

Quote Polonius from Hamlet: "To thine own self be true".  Shakespeare certainly advocates the idea.

What about: "You can't love others until you love yourself"

You must first be true to yourself, to be able to form and sustain deep relationships with others.

The only truth we will ever know is about ourselves. The only certainty is our own desire. The only knowledge is of our own thought processes. Every action we perpetuate, every event we partake in, is ultimately aimed at developing this knowledge. At enhancing our pervasive sense of self-identity.

Wealth is not important. By its very nature, it is temporal. Happiness derived from wealth is, therefore, inconsequential. Success measured by wealth is meaningless.

Relationships developed with other people are important. They are important because they allow us a window into another soul. We may never understand another- but it provides us perspective. It gives us meaning.

But, ultimately, all that matters is sticking to your morals. If nothing matters - all that matters is what we do. The only certainy we know relates to ourself. It is therein that we will develop lasting happiness. When it comes down to it, the only person you have to justify your choices to is yourself. The only person you have to face in the mirror is yourself. Expediency, for the sake of attaining a higher purpose, is folly - because the highest purpose is self-discovery.

I haven't done identity and belonging, so its likely that all of that is a rambly piece of crap... but just my initial thoughts.

To have confidence and strong self-esteem, allows us to develop our identity. Maslow's heirachy of needs shows that self-actualistation is the highest peak we can reach, reinforcing the idea that being true to one self is the most important thing.

Try rephrasing it: "We are ultimately more inclined to put ourselves first in lieu of the groups to which we belong"

Think of Witness (if you have studied it) Rachael has the opportunity to join Book in the city, but fears that she will lose her very sense of self which hasn't hanged since birth if she does, and so she stays with the Amish. as the director (forgot his name...but doesn't matter) suggests, she is ultimately left to lead a restricted life. She is framed in a window, whereas John goes off into the distance and to countless possibilities. ( I don't write expository for context so this is really rough)

So,
There are certain situations which arise in life where we do indeed need to be true to ourselves.
There are also times at which it is best to consider the implications of leaving our group (like Rachael) and going in search of our true selves.

In the end, to live a content and happy life, we mustn't deny who we really are. We must find a group where there is no need to place ourselves in front of 'other considerations'

Our school did Witness but I'm focusing more on Catcher as I prefer the ideas and whatnot. But there's a heap of stuff to talk about on Catcher!
