Scared to death about Year 12
« on: November 19, 2018, 01:52:47 pm »

Hi All,
I'm currently in Year 11, and we've just had our Year 11 practise exams for unit 2. I totally flunked them, mainly because I focused too much on my History 3/4 exam. Now the coordinator wants to call in my parens to discuss "Year 12" and "Options". I am scared to death and want to cry. I am aware I will need to lift my game for Year 12 as I have only been getting 50-60%'s on my SACs. What should I do?

Thanks

You did nothing wrong! Anything 3/4 should be higher priority than 1/2 things! How were your marks for 3/4 History?

This may not be relevant for you, but re: discussing "options" it is entirely up to you what you do next year, don't let them convince you to change to unscored or VCAL or anything like that if that's not what you want to do. Again, this may not be relevant but it's something that happens at my old school - they can't force you to take an alternate pathway if that's not what you want, so don't let them convince you to do something you don't want.

Doing badly on year 11 SACs and exams doesn't determine how well you'll do in year 12, you can definitely improve next year and do well - don't give up on yourself!

3/4 SAC marks were alright! A consistent 68-70% throughout really. Not amazing but better than nothing.

I'd like to get into a Uni course, nothing spectacular, I am keen to do Criminology. I just am scared about getting yelled at in front of my parents because I have messed up a few SAC's this year and I flunked the end of year exams.
Should I be worried?

Just as phoenix fire has pointed out, they can't force you to do VCAL, or anything like that. It is totally up to you!
You have to convince your parents that Year 11 doesn't contribute to anything (if they don't know) and maybe appeal that you did your best to manage all your subjects whilst doing a 3/4 subject.
If you are not satisfied with your history study score, you can always re-take it next year (but I personally wouldn't - many people don't seem to improve their score much even if they did it the second time)

I doubt they'll be yelling at you in front of your parents. They'll probably just want to go over if you still want to do VCE and maybe discuss things you can do to improve next year e.g. they might suggest you get a tutor or something like that.

Welcome to AN! You've had some good perspectives above, but I just wanted to add my 2 cents.

The fact that you've recognised this and decided to take action shows that you're in the right mindset to do well next year. :)

My advice is that you should check out some of the articles on here or here and stick around to get help. The articles have plenty of ways to study and do well in [insert subject], so those should help you out. Actually, one of the best ways to learn is to teach someone and get help for the parts you realise you're not so good at. The AN forum is great for this: there's plenty of people around the place to get help from and to help along the way with many of us being past high school students or fellow VCE students.

As for your second post:

Nothing to be worried about. You'll feel bad about it (no reasonable person wouldn't), but it's what you do with that experience to learn from it and avoid the same mistakes next time that matters. Channel this into motivation to do well in Year 12 and you should be good to go. :)

While I believe that 1/2 sets a necessary foundation for year 12 studies, you can absolutely smash 3/4 subjects without necessarily doing so well in the 1/2 subjects.

I personally know quite a few people who scraped 50-70 in their subjects in year 11 but put in an immense amount of effort in year 12 to lift those scores to be in the 90s.

2018: ATAR: 99.35
Subjects
English: 44
Methods: 43
Further Maths: 50
Chemistry: 46
Legal: 40

Year 12 may seem like a huge obstacle at the time but it's something that every student faces. You just gotta take it one day at a time, and try to make the most out of what you have. I'm so glad that I've finally finished year 12, but looking back, it was actually one of my favourite years of high school,! Like all things, year 12 will pass and one day be a distant memory, so make the most of it! You actually have a lot of time, a whole year to master a set amount of content. It may seem daunting, but through mutual suffering/sacs/celebrations, you and your cohort will be able to get through it. Don't forget to ask for help whenever you need it. You can do it!
