Hey guys so next year i'm in year 10 and I've been chosen to do Math Methods. My school is pretty competitive and also a high-scoring one, so can anyone please inform me on the topics covered in Math Methods Unit 1/2 so I can have a headstart next year? Thanks!

Hey! Welcome to atarnotes   :)

For any VCE subject you can find all of the assessable topics by looking at the study design

Note: all of the math subjects share the same same design document so make sure you scroll/click your way to the methods 1&2 section

As a broad overview, some of the topics you cover include:
 - determining if something is a function
- solving and graphing polynomials
 - solving and graphing trigonometric functions
 - basic differentiation (think the concept of finding the gradient, but also for graphs that aren't linear)

Good luck! And remember to also take breaks on your holiday :)

If you have the textbook or are getting It soon I think basically every topic has the possibility of being covered - although depends on whether your school chooses to focus on certain parts over others. Just working through as much or as little as you want through the textbook from chapter 1 onwards would be a great headstart.

Along with the topics miniturtle has suggested, I believe that the most important aspects are to learn how to graph properly and develop good habits in this. By properly I mean - being able to graph difficult equations, labeling everything, not having furry graphs etc  and have overall neatness in your work. Also to try to develop into a perfectionist and continue to critically analyse your work to see what you could do better.

I would say all topics are important maybe except for combinatorics and permutations since they don't really come up in 3/4 methods but 2 topics of heavy importance are transformations since they come up for every type of equation and even in probability distributions, The 2nd being differentiation and integration by first principles - for some students this is their first exposure to calculus so can be quite tricky to initially get your head around that type of thinking.

Ok thanks! I came to realise that my drawings for sine/cos graphs are very bad (as in not as curved as it should be) , which my teacher deducted some marks for :(
