Any ideas for English oral contentions?

Hi all,

I'm not sure how common this is, but my school makes students present their persuasive oral (which is normally part of unit 4) in the first few weeks of term 1 as to get it out of the way quickly. I'm a math/science kid so the open-ended nature of English makes me really struggle with it, so I was hoping I could get some ideas for an issue to talk about froms ome of you guys. As I said before I'm a science kid, so I'm heavily interested in those kinds of issues however I've been warned by teachers that science topics aren't typically the best to choose because you might have to spend too much time trying to explain the issue instead of argue it, negatively affecting the presentation. I've also been told to steer away from extremely common topics as to stand out more.

Does anybody have some issues that are kind of science-ey that I could use? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Here's some issues i've thought of:
-> vaccinations
-> stem cell research
-> sugar industry (can use the psychology of humans if you were going against the sugar industry as evidence)
-> euthanasia (not too sciency but has been done to death (pun not intended lmao))
-> gmo food
The most important thing is choosing a topic you are passionate about. Is there anything on the news that captures your attention? political stuff? etc.

Here's some I could think of

- Aus air quality standards (hint: they're comparatively low)
- automation
- nuclear energy
- space travel (is it worth it? )
- lots of topics in agriculture you could go for (eg antibiotic use for livestock, monocropping, silencing genes in GMOs)
- crispr research
- air in potato chip bags for preservation and cushioning (or is it just to trick customers? )
- use of genetic information by insurance companies

Definitely important that you chose something you connect with - if you read the news you'll probably come across some interesting ideas
