Monash Biomed Query

Hello An!
I unfortunately did not receive my aim score and achieved around an 85 ATAR. I’m entitled to SEAS because of my underrepresented school, low socioeconomic area and health issues which according to the Monash Seas calculator significantly increases my selection rank to above the stipulated atar for biomedical science. I was wondering of my chances of being accepted as I’m not sure of how accurate this calculator is and I’m interested in any anecdotal information.

Thanks!!

Hey there,
In 2017, the lowest ATAR to receive an offer was 85.15 (before SEAS, etc.). This year (2018), the lowest ATAR was 82.30 (which corresponded to more places being available in the course). From what I heard, the number of places will either be increased or remain roughly the same next year (2019). I don't think that Monash would provide you with a calculator to completely throw you off, and based on previous years, I believe that you are within the range where an offer is possible, so I wouldn't discount your chances yet :)

Hope that helps :)

Thank you for your swift and insightful reply!

Although I know you’re not intimately involved with admissions processes how likely are my chances? Is there anyone you know of that has done the same?

No worries! :)

Unfortunately, I don't know anyone (as far as I'm aware of, anyway) who has been through this process, so I won't be much help from that perspective.

It probably wouldn't be fair on you to give you an exact answer about your chances, especially since it will depend on various factors, which can change from year to year. But, what I can say is that based on previous years' data, you have a chance of getting an offer. Like I said, the calculator probably isn't there to fool you - if it predicts that your adjusted selection rank is likely to receive an offer, then I would take that as a good sign. Best of luck on your offer :)
