Why does Grenville outset the novel with Rooke’s first day at School?

here are mine:
Rooke quickly ascertains that he is an ‘outsider’ on his first day of school. Danielle Rooke’s journey of self-discovery is a fundamental aspect of The Lieutenant. Therefore, it is plain to deduce that Grenville's commencement of the novel with Rooke’s earliest memory of self-awareness engenders the foundation of such a prominent aspect of the text. Rooke's sense of disparity with the rest of society is encapsulated through the fact that he 'could not work out what Mrs Bartholomew wanted'. Indeed, this moment of confusion is only the first of many instances that teach Rooke that he is 'out of step with the world'. When juxtaposed against his affinity with logic and order, Rooke's disinclination towards school suggests that societal values are ambiguous. Moreover, the fact that Rooke is reprimanded by his teacher represents that society is unforgiving of those who are 'out of place'.
