You could get second hand ones (probably 2006-2008) for half the price and print off the exam papers for later years. The 'extra' questions in Checkpoints are usually the same for every year and the only new stuff are questions from the most recent exam.

Because it organises questions in a useful format for VCE students -- organising questions is "free" but it costs valuable time that VCE students are willing to pay for!

The more interesting question is, why Checkpoints and not some other publishing company?

Checkpoints established their brand first and has a first mover advantage in the industry -- but competitors are creeping in :)

Haha, nope? I'm not in the publishing industry. Too much competition.

So are 2009 practically the same as 2008 besides the fact that 2009 has 2008 VCAA paper behind?

Pretty much yes.  I've just used 2008 Checkpoints (except for Physics) this year.

Well the author(s) do add questions of their own and probably it's to earn money as well.

EDIT:  If you think about it, considering the name "Checkpoints" and all the reputation it has behind it, there is a lot of money involved in it.

they replace the exam at the end with the latest one i think, and add in questions from the previous year.
ex. psych 09 has 00-07 q's and 08 exam. psych 10 will have 00-08 and 09 exam :P

basically any subject that has a major study design change like chem, then the latest checkpoints is worth buying. Because they weed out all the unnecessary shit for each unit and put in the relevant stuff plus solutions.

O yea o forgot to add they have awesome STUDY CARDS for chem as well =P

Seriously checkpoints has been so useful for me especially in physics. I'm not sure about methods or spesh checkpoints but <3 physics checkpoints.

I second this. I found the physics checkpoints very useful, and the 2006 edition (I think it was) had a summary for each topic right at the end of the book which itself would've paid for the entire book. I felt like the maths and chemistry checkpoints were less useful.
