Hey guys!
I'm a Year 11 and this year I did two 3/4 subjects (psychology and religion and society). If I get a 35 in both, I can apply for a reduced load.

If however I don't get the required scores, I will need to pick up a subject. I'm deliberating between history revolutions and business management. What are pros and cons of both? Which is easier to pick up without the 1/2?

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated!

-Chloe :)

Hey!

Not sure about Revs but Business Management is really easy to pick up without doing 1/2. Most of the content doesn't overlap so you wouldn't need to play too much catch-up.

It's competitive at the top end but it's pretty easy to at least pass (imo). At least in my experience a lot of the content's just common sense. There's a fair bit of definitions you need to memorise and recite off-by-heart but the rest's just knowing how to apply the content to case studies rather than just regurgitating textbook knowledge.

Nearly everything links back to something else in the course so it's not a subject where you can just sit a SAC and forget that knowledge until the exam which can get a bit hard when you're nearly finished with the course and you've forgotten key knowledge from the beginning of the year (like me).

Overall it's pretty bland but a lot of the content you learn's applicable to real life so I've found it genuinely useful. Plus it's easy to practise a bit by just reading up on business news and trying to understand it :D

I've heard Revs is pretty tough, what made you narrow your choices down to Revs and BusMan?

I posted a page to help with subject selection on my blog and although it's not specific to History and Business, it might help you decide.
Here's the link: https://chamomileandcolour.wordpress.com/2019/08/01/how-to-pick-your-subjects/
I hope it helps! <3

Well, I narrowed my choices down to Revs and Busman because there were some subjects I knew I didn't want to do or couldn't do because I didn't do the 1/2. I didn't want to do biology because I'm not into the science-y subjects, didn't want to pick up further maths because I'd chosen to drop maths before VCE because I hate it. I don't like prac subjects so all art, design, sport, etc. subjects were out (although I did consider food studies, but I just don't know how I feel about doing pracs). So basically it was a matter of eliminating the 'NO' choices to create a list of 'MAYBE' subjects. This list ended up including:
-Busman
-Revs
-Food studies
-Legal studies

I eliminated food because of the practical aspect, and eliminated legal because I thought it would be too hard to pick up without the 1/2 in terms of legal jargon and general knowledge about the law that I wouldn't possess. Thus, busman and revs ended up being my final two options.

Thanks so much for the help - this is really useful :)

Thanks! I really appreciate it!
Have you made your decision or are you still thinking it through? There's so much to consider and it feels like there's so much pressure to make the right choice!

Are you interested in history? If so, I really recommend Revs. I studied it back in VCE and it was easily my favourite subject. Pretty interesting content and even though obviously you need to sit SACs and exams and stuff it was nice to be learning about the world and feel like the things I was learning were applicable outside of just getting good marks in an exam.

People often get scared off by it being "content heavy" but honestly from what I've heard, bus man is also quite content heavy in terms of having to memorise so many definitions down to the last word. I'd recommend maybe having a chat to both a revs and bus man teacher at your school, they'll be able to tell you a bit more about how the subject is run at your school and should be able to give you a better feel for if one subject is better for you than the other.

I can't comment on Bus Man, but I do revs and the content in 1/2 and 3/4 are completely seperate. However, you will gain some writing skills from doing 1/2 history that will help you in 3/4, although don't let that deter you from doing the subject. Its extremely interesting and easily my favourite subject. There is a lot of content (two whole revolutions), but its easy to understand and learning it feels more like leisure than study. It is a subject where if you know your stuff and you're a competant writer, then you can score very highly(you only need about 70% on the end of year exam for a 40). Having one less subject will definately help with learning all the content.
