Is Accelerating a subject beneficial or not?

Hey Guys, I’m currently in year 10 and was wondering if you guys recommend accelerating or not. Currently I view accelerating a great opportunity however, do you guys think that people accelerating a subject get a better score isn’t that or those specific subjects than the ones who don’t. If you guys could give me some recommendations on what to accelerate (if I want to), Adv/Dis-Adv and some feedback from past experiences or currently! Looking forward to hear from you all, cheers smartypants27.

Hi!
I’m in Year 10 as well and I’m currently studying units 1 and 2 of Health and Human Development.
I definitely think it’s a great idea to accelerate a subject, because you get to have one extra subject under your belt. I’ve also learnt how I can study efficiently and I’ve been able to experiment with that class. Usually the students who are in the year younger than the rest of the class end up doing the best, too.
A downside might be that you may have to focus more on your accelerated subject, and prioritise it over certain things. However, if you figure out how to manage your time in a way that benefits you and works for you, this shouldn’t be too much of a problem.
I’d say have a chat to a teacher about the prospect of you accelerating, and if you’re deadset, go for it! You’ve got more to gain than lose.

Hey smartypants27! I'm assuming you're thinking of accelerating in further maths?

I think further is definitely a great subject to accelerate in, especially if you have strong a background in maths. Further is one of the most popular subjects for people to accelerate in, as the completion of 1/2 is (arguably) not necessary to do well in 3/4.

Speaking from experience, I had the opportunity to accelerate in further, but didn't, and I really regret it now. Of course that's just my own experience, others might have different opinions.

Another thing about accelerating is that most people do 5~6 subjects in VCE in total. If you did a 3/4 early in year 11, then that's one less subject to worry about in year 12; not to mention by doing a subject early you're able to devote most of your attention to that ONE 3/4, so you have a better chance (theoretically) of doing well.

Hope that makes sense! ^-^

VCE: Literature [50] Methods [50] Further [48] Chemistry [40] Biology [33]
2022: Bachelor of Science (Mathematical Economics) @ ANU

I would so go for it! I'm doing Further 3/4 as a Year 11 and it's my favourite subject! (I did General Maths 1/2 in Year 10). If you plan to do other maths, like Methods, you will get a pretty good idea of how to use your CAS quite early on which is a bonus! You have nothing to lose if you try a unit 1/2 in Year 10, in fact, you have more to gain ;D. It also helps relieve pressure in Year 12, knowing you have already done one 3/4 sequence and you know the process of how SACs work and etc.

If you do a 3/4 in Year 11, you will have more time to focus on it and most likely will do better! I say choose a subject that you are passionate about because, in the end, a good score comes from enthusiasm and dedication.

accelerating into further maths was the best decision i ever made. I'm in year 11 now and have my further 3/4 exam in a couple of weeks.
