I had no idea for that qn and wrote that the YAC needed it to be able to replicate like a normal cell would :S
thats what i wrote (it has to have centromemeres for the spindle fibres to attach to)

It was hard and Question 1 was mean and so was the last question!
I finished with about 5 minutes to spare.
Any ideas when somebody will put up the solutions?

If someone posts up the exam, it might be worth doing a 'collaborative' set of solutions. I've retained less of unit 4 than I have of unit 3, so anything I do myself will be even less complete than my mid-year solutions =S

I took a stab and said it was to ensure even distribution of it during cell division.

Yeah, I said that a eukaryote needs a centromere for mitotic division

What did everyone say for the other name for gene cloning? I feel stupid having put down replication.

I feel even more stupid for having a brain meltdown and writing transformation :@

i found that quite easy: i just wrote scientist from all over the world can communicate with each other by LANGUAGE and therefore invent new technology

I SAID TEACHING STUDENTS HOW TO PERFORM GENE THERAPY.
Yes.
I seriously had no idea for this entire exam.

what did you guys write for the YAC and why the centromere?

Ahahahaha
ahahahaha
I was like UMMMMMMMM.
I put something about it being there to hold the allelic DNA and the whatever the other thing was in place because that chromosome was a free and isolated one, whereas the plasmid didn't need one because it's circular and therefore all DNA will be held in place without a centromere.

Yeah.  I had no idea.

If I understand this question correctly, what others have said regarding spindle fibres is correct. In prometaphase (midway between prophase and metaphase), the spindle fibres from the centromeres attach to proteins located on either side of the centromere, and in anaphase after the centromere is cleaved, these fibres then separate the two sister chromatids. This isn't required in bacteria because their DNA reproduces by binary fission instead of mitosis.

shiny, do you think my answer for the YAC question is right i wrote: "The Yac has a centromere as it is required in cell division".
