Bachelor of Computer Science in Data Science

How much does the entire course structure of a Bachelor of Computer science differ if you choose to specialise in Data Science as opposed to Advanced Computer Science?
Is the over lap, in terms of specific subjects that you study, quite large?

I'm asking because I am interested in Data science but I don't want to do CS and choose Data Science as my specialisation and then end up studying about stuff more directly related to computer science.

Thanks

Hey! Sorry this doesn’t really answer your question, but if you want to study data science and not computer science, why not just go for the Bachelor of Data Science?

VCE: Literature [50] Methods [50] Further [48] Chemistry [40] Biology [33]
2022: Bachelor of Science (Mathematical Economics) @ ANU

I would just do the Bachelor of Data Science, but I want to do a double degree with commerce, and the only double degree that I could do to study Data science is CS/Bcom. Probs should've said that in the original post.

I’m guessing by your later post you’re asking about the difference between:
1. BComm/BCompSci (Advanced Comp Sci) and
2. BComm/BCompSci (Data Science)
Just specifying this outright in case I’m mistaken and you wanted to compare BCompSciAdv. with BCompSci (Data Science), which is different.

According to their course maps (which you can see here), it looks like your third and fourth year units (subjects) are the things that change, as well as one second year unit. Basically a bit over a quarter of the double degree changes, so you can assume there to be some overlap (given the first two years are mostly the same), but also some differences.

The data science specialisation, as you can tell, delves more into data science later in the double degree, while the advanced computer science stream is more general.

Not sure if that really answers your question, but hope that helps regardless.

Wow, thanks so much for finding that link for me! Yeah that was what I was asking, sorry for poorly wording the original post.

That's interesting. I think I'm 100% set on doing Bcomm/BCompSci (Data Science) now. It's a shame that I only really get to dive into Data Science stuff at the end of the second year. I'll probs learn of those units myself next year in my free time (if I have any free time).

Thanks again, I really appreciate your help

Actually, this has been a move for the past few years to have a “common first year” approach. Most broad degrees at some of the larger unis have switched their degrees in a way that most people will take similar units or study similar content in first year e.g. taking basic coding in first year Comp Sci, and then specialise in subsequent years, so that people would have a bit more time to pick the major they would be less likely to regret later on and to ensure that all students had the right foundations to build their knowledge on.

Yeah I guess that makes sense and is probably the most suitable thing to do.
