Novel suggestions to help improve English?

Hi there,
Heading into my final year, I'm trying to find many ways to improve my skills, especially with English. One of the pieces of advice I've heard is to read novels to extend vocabulary and writing skills.I already love recreational reading, so doing this wouldn't feel like much of a chore. I was just wondering if there is a specific genre or an author that I can look into to help with English, a book that has sophisticated language and themes (nothing too much). I am a bit of a slow reader though so preferably nothing over 400 pages? For reference, our school will be studying Women of Troy, The Crucible and The Dressmaker, so something that links with these books would be awesome. Please also feel free to add in any other tips on how to improve in VCE English..
Thank you :)
