You can absolutely improve in year 11 compared to your year 10 marks. I wouldn't be too surprised if you do see a dip in your marks near the start, but you can climb out of that and end up in an academically stronger place at the end of year 11 if you consistently work on it and learn from your mistakes.

I think it might also be worth looking into why you place the level of importance on your grades that you do. It's great to do as well as you can but it will probably be better for your wellbeing if you reduce the importance of the letters at the end and focus on learning, improving, and trying. It can be very difficult to change your mindset over marks (especially at the start) but given how much stress this seems to cause you I think it's definitely worth working on.

Good luck!!

Students tend to improve a lot through year 11. Your doing much better than I ever did in year 10. My year 10 marks were like:

English: 50s
HSIE: Barely passing, 50s
Maths: 60s - 70s
Science: 90s (only because I have done Contest Physics and those Science competitions)

So basically I was barely passing all my subjects. So if I can improve as much as I did on them I'm sure you can do much better..
You'll only do worse if you don't study. If you do study hard and smart I'm sure you'll do great =)

How did you improve so much Man, many students/teachers say year 11 is completely different to year 10, this gives me some hope I think 🥴

Anyways how did you improve so much, what resources did you use

The first thing I did was identify why I was doing bad, so I identified it as:

English: I found it useless and boring and so never studied
HSIE: Same subsection as English
Maths: I was just too lazy and focused all my time on doing Physics comps and what not.

Now in year 11 you choose your subjects so of course choose what your good at and so I played to my strengths and obviously choose all the STEM subjects, but I still needed to improve on Maths and English.

Maths:
For this I knew I was more than capable of getting high marks I just wasn't bothered enough to study. I had performed so 'badly' in year 10 for Maths and so because of that my teacher was concerned if I was good enough to do Maths Extension 1 which I ended up JUST getting into from the entrance test.

So I guess my MAIN motivator was to prove them wrong and show that I really can do this and so I studied really hard for Maths in that I sought out the hardest questions I could find and started doing them. I started actually paying really close attention in class(something which I never did). I went to math help in recess and lunch I would sometimes hassle my teacher if I didn't get how to do a problem and she was more than happy to help. Basically putting in the extra mile and my mark went from 60s in year 10 to first in the cohort in year 11 with all my marks being 90+.

English:
This has always been my biggest struggle since high school because I found it to be a waste of time(and still do  ;)). I actually neglected English in year 11 completely and my improvements only came when I began trying in year 12. I realized even though I found it a waste of time that it's still gonna count towards my Atar.

So for the first time ever I actually began writing practice essays and I guess became the biggest tryhard in English for a year lol. I would frequently email my teacher essays, seek feedback on paragraphs and ask my teacher "What do I need to do to get a good mark in English?".

In terms of what resources I used I looked up examples of what a band 6 essay looks like, what kind of language they used etc. I would try and use similar language in my essays but not copying. I also got a tutor and so every week I would submit paragraphs and my writing improved a LOT just from practice. My rank also went from being like near the bottom to 3rd in year 12.

Effort drives everything. Start looking at sample HSC responses and you'll see the kind of level you need to be at to get a band 5/6. Seek out the tough questions. You may feel I have no idea how to do them but constantly doing them will build the connections in your head. You should also work hard AND smart. Doing the easy questions all the time is working hard but it's NOT working smart and this is what caused me to improve in Maths.

Lastly year 11 is not 'completely' different. Yes it's a whole new ball park BUT the same principles of hard work apply. So have fun because year 11 was honestly THE best year of highschool as it doesn't have the strict nature of junior years or the stress of HSC.

Hi there!

don't be too worried about how you'll go in year 11, I failed half my subjects in year 10 and the ones I didn't fail had grades all over the place.
if you are mostly doing subjects you enjoy you will be fine, the only class im getting less than a B in is English (but I usually pass the assessments which is a first for me). as long as you put in the effort that is needed for you specifically to do well (it's different for everyone and you will probably find out what works for you if you haven't already). the key is to not stress about it.

good luck!
