Hi, just some question ? ^^

10 ppl each roll a fair six sided die once. A player wins if he gets a 6. If less than 6 ppl won, what is a probability that at least 4 people won.

(from CSE test 2008 )

Thanks

Let X = number of people who win.
X ~ Bi(10, 1/6)

binomcdf(10,1/6,4,5) = 0.0672897
binomcdf(10,1/6,0,5) = 0.9975618

hence,

binomcdf(10,1/6,4,5) = 0.0672897

Is the step quoted above able to be done on a graphics calc, or are you using CAS syntax?

There's an argument error when I enter that syntax into my calc.

Most calcs should have a binomcdf function. Which calculator are you using? If you still have the manual it may tell you where to find it.

No, I think he meant binomcdf(10,1/6,4,5). That's not possible on a Ti-84, you have to just get binomcdf(10,1/6,4) and binomcdf(10,1/6, 5) and add together.
When I get sad, I stop being sad, and be AWESOME instead. True story.

binomcdf(10,1/6,0,5) = 0.9975618

Is that the working (calculator syntax) we're supposed to show in CAS exam 2's?

But if we wrote:

binomcdf(10,1/6,4,5) = 0.0672897

Does that count as a method mark for CAS?

No you will get ZERO for the question, despite your answer being correct.
VCAA, around April-March this year, sent emails to many maths teachers,
across Victoria, explaining this exact issue.
