Hey there, so I got my ATAR and I was quite unhappy with it. But there is one subject in which I feel like I do know the content quite well, but just didn't get over 40. Can I still help people with an under 40 study score?

I just think, some students don't want help from an under 40 study score student. Hope I am wrong.

Absolutely, I got a 38 in bio which was pretty sh*t, but I since I redeemed myself in biomed by getting good grades in the bio subjects, I feel I should be qualified enough to explain the content. However, since VCAA likes pedantic stock responses, I always help with the disclaimer that I didn't get 40+ so I might not know what exact answers VCAA prefers.

You still attempted it so you definitely have something or the other to share!

I don’t think there is anything wrong with helping others with the content that you are super good at, but you shouldn’t be seeking any payment for it, that’s all. I’ve had a bad experience with a tutor who got below 40 (they were bad, trust me) and they just ate up all our money by charging the same rate that those who get 50 raw charge! Anyway, it is good that you’d like to help others, but just don’t present yourself as a tutor in case you make mistakes or are shaky in some things  ;)

Is it fine if I teach for free in order to get experience? After like a year or so, can I charge once I get to that stage? But I do agree with what you said, I don't intend to ask for money at this point.

Yep, you can still help other students even if you got below a 40 study score. I tutor VCE Psych and I got a 39 study score. Given my slightly lower score, I do charge a lot less compared to other tutors.

Thank you, that is what I intend to do. Although I won't charge them for a while.

How should I advertise myself? Now that I know what to do.

Maybe Facebook or by word of mouth…you could somehow mention it to your school and then maybe you could assist some students.

I also want to say that not everyone who needs help in a subject is going to be aiming for a 40+ study score anyways and probably won't be too bothered by the fact that you didn't get 40+ . They'd probably still appreciate your help.
