This isn't directly related to the topic, but I thought I'd say that the best resources you can find aren't what you'd find in a VCE bookshop (and what you seem to be asking for). To gain a greater understanding of the subject, I'd recommend that you read the following books:

+The Cambridge Encyclopaedia of Language
+ Blooming English and Weeds in the Garden of Words (By Kate Burridge)
+ Euphemism and Dysphemism (Kate Burridge and Jean Mulder, methinks)

There's more that I can't remember, but go to your local library and borrow as many linguistics books as you can. It really helped me - I skipped the 1/2, but I started the subject with broad knowledge, examples, quotes and a decent understanding of metalanguage. If you have good English Language teachers, they'll probably photocopy a lot of newspaper articles and online resources for you to use throughout the year, but it's also a good idea if you keep your own journal to refer to for SACs and the exam.

+The Cambridge Encyclopaedia of Language

If this is the book written by David Crystal then I highly recommend getting your hands on this. It covers pretty much everything you'll need in VCE EL and then some. The price tag can be a bit hefty (I think it's around $100) so if you can find a library that allows you to borrow it (most libraries have it only as a reference book) then that will be your best bet.

David Crystals other books are also handy for more specialised essay topics (for instance, 'Txting the Gr8 Deb8').

Derrick Ha's essay book is also a very nice resource and show you what constitutes a 50 raw SS essay. Just keep in mind the essays he wrote were under the old study design where you did not need to reference the stimulus material (although they are still relevant for next years course).

The Insight Exam Guide is also a nice resource early in the year, although the essays aren't always top-notch.

I would recommend you sign up for the Wise Words mailing list.

Also (un)surprisingly Wikipedia can be a fantastic resource.
