i thought we could either name the chemical or give the chemical formula or do we need know both?

Vanadium(V) Oxide is more preferred. :) [V is the Roman Numeral for 5, in this case indicating oxidation state V5+]

In Vanadium Pentoxide, the oxidation state is implied by the prefix in front of O.
