Who has done it and can shed some light on some of the details and stuff?

All i know is you need to do it for medicine and science type courses in Uni.

There are a fair few threads on this (just search UMAT and there are about 6 pages of threads). Basically it is an aptitude test comprising of three sections.
The first section is logical reasoning and problem solving, which in short is a whole lot or reading, analysing diagrams and answering questions on them.

The second section is understanding people, where you are given dialogues on different situations and you are asked different questions about the emotions the people may have been feeling (bit of a vocab test if you ask me).

The third section is non verbal reasoning where there are patterns and shapes and you are asked to put them in order and choose the middle one, choose a shape which fits best into the picture etc. It is mainly finding patterns.

This is just a short description. I suggest you get your hands on the Acer books, as they will give you a better idea of the structure (http://umatweb.acer.edu.au/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=21&Itemid=3)

You are given you results a few months later and you are given a score. Basically your score needs to be high enough to get you an interview. You would want to be aiming for about the 90th+ percentile. There is also a fair bit of information on the website "medstudentsonline" (http://www.medstudentsonline.com.au/).

Oh alrite cool. Is it hard to get high for it though? Like is it really necessary to do all those preparation workshops?

Well in order to score "highly" you usually need to beat about 90% of the people who sit the exam on the day, so yeah, i guess you could say it is hard. It isn't necessary to do the prep workshops, some people can score highly on pure natural ability, however prep packages may help. The prep courses are costly though, and you need to be careful not to choose a dodgy one.

Yeah i see, what happens if you don't beat 90% of the people? Do you just redo it next year or keep doing it until you do?

UMAT is only for year 12's.  So if you don't do well in the UMAT, then you'll have to do the GAMSAT if you're really eager.

Otherwise you could try to do the UMAT twice...

UMAT is not only for year 12's. You have to be minumum year 12 to sit it and you can have as many goes as you want. But note that it is the undergraduate medical admissions test meaning you can't have a university degree and apply for med school using the UMAT. If you have an undergrad degree you have to apply for graduate medical school using the GAMSAT.

Ah right.  Sorry.  But I don't think many people would want to either repeat year 12 or skip a year of university just to do the UMAT again.

Yes, there aren't many, but there are some willing to take a gap year, since they are soo keen to get into med, straight up. :P

Actually, quite a few people I know of in my course have taken a gap year in 2008 to do the UMAT again because they didn't achieve the required UMAT score in 2007.

I also know of someone who redid Year 12 to get a higher ENTER and UMAT to get into med.
