Anyone know if there will be any news about those from "underrepresented schools"? That's the only category I fall under.

lol, nope. Almost EVERY public schools fall under it. So they wouldn't really make anything, because it would give THOUSANDS of students the ability to come into Melbourne.

Well yeah, but they'd still make the ENTER lets say for Arts 85 instead of 88 if you're from such a school. Since this category has so many people then it would be more competitive? This is all just bouncing off logic, no evidence to back this at all.

I'm not sure about "EVERY" but many schools that are in the rural areas fall into that category.

I don't think it would be more competitive since UoM will first look at applicants that aren't SEAS, offer them a place and then of the remaining places, they'll look at SEAS.

Not mine. D: And my school literally has the crappest reputation in the area. (Good schools just don't go from 800-1000 students to barely making 400 students in less than 3 years) All the current year 12's raged when it wasn't on the list (especially because the career counsellor said it was).

Crossing my fingers for it to get on next year.

But omg, I hope this continues next year because I fall under one of those categories.

LOL, I wasn't too clear. I meant like "every" because I had a look at the list, and its just that A LIST, it was huge. One of the requirements is to have less than 14% of students enrolled at Melb Uni....at many schools (public especially) they would be lucky to get 5-7 (from my observation)

And yeah, Kendraaa I didn''t mean it doesn't account for nothing, you do as Glamglozer said get considered and bumped up a little. But u were asking for ANY NEWS, but yeah; i'm in the same boat, as are 100's of otehr schools LOL.

It depends which public schools of course and probably the location of the school.  Like for example, from a quick scan through the list, I couldn't find any public schools from the eastern suburbs so I presume those public schools are better resourced and breed more UoM students.

My sister got this email yesterday. Even though she is 99% sure she is not going to unimelb next year, I find this quite exciting.

Quote
Dear XXXXX,

We noticed that you have applied for Access Melbourne through one or both of the following SEAS categories:

    * Category 5 - disadvantaged socio-economic background
    * Category 6 - applicants from rural or isolated areas

This year, a new University of Melbourne policy means that we are able to be more transparent about the selection process for Access Melbourne students.

This means that students who receive an ENTER of 78 or above will be guaranteed a Commonwealth supported place (CSP) in the Bachelor of Arts or Environments or Science at Melbourne.

Students who receive an ENTER of 88 or above will be guaranteed a Commonwealth supported place (CSP) in the Bachelor of Biomedicine or Commerce at Melbourne.

How does this selection guarantee work for me?

If you are eligible under Access Melbourne for one or both of the categories indicated above, meet the course entry requirements and achieve the minimum ENTER stated above, you will be guaranteed a place in your chosen course. Once you receive your Year 12 results, you can relax and enjoy the holiday break knowing you have secured your place at the University of Melbourne in 2010.

For further information

    * Visit http://www.cop.unimelb.edu.au
    * Come and visit us on Course Information Day at the Parkville campus between 10am and 3pm on Thursday 17 December 2009.
We will be holding an information session about Access Melbourne on Course Information Day (including guaranteed entry, admissions and scholarships) at 12.30pm - 1.15pm, in the Carrillo Gantner Theatre, Sidney Myer Asia Centre. To register for this session and for further program details including course information seminars on the day, go to http://www.cop.unimelb.edu.au
    * Talk to an Office of Admissions adviser by phone: (03) 8344 6543 or toll free 1800 801 662 on weekdays between 8am and 6pm.

We will also be sending more detailed information about the Access Melbourne guaranteed entry to you by post so keep an eye out for a letter and brochure in early December.

All the best for a relaxing summer break. We hope to see you at the University of Melbourne next year.

Regards,

Office of Admissions
The University of Melbourne

Is this a pessimistic '99% sure she is not going to unimelb'? Or is it to do with not liking the Melbourne model?

If it's the former question she should note, the results haven't even come out yet so she should just wait until then before deciding what her fate is. Good luck to her and I hope she gets her first preference.

Eh. She has her heart set on Monash - and yeah, she's not too keen about doing breadth subjects. Melb Uni is around her 5th preference.

does that mean people who have applied for other categories apart from 5 and 6 have been disadvantaged? since the instruction of application has not prioritised those categories. what about people who applied for non-english speaking backgrounds but also fall within category 5&6 but was not informed to mention them to Vtac?

why 5&6? because those students tend to perform better than ESL students?
well the limit can turn into a threshold..

I answered this question before when Kendraa asked.

I think they choose these because it coevrs a SMALLER number of students than the category u mentioned.

Remember, A prestigious Uni like Melbourne doesn't want to be SWAMPED by people from "under represented schools".....and when u add ur category "non eng speaking background" it doubles this pool of people.

I am not saying these people are "dumb" or "worse", but Melbourne IMO decisively selected these 2 categories because of covers an ACCEPTABLE number of people....i.e. not too much.

Universities have come under INCREASING PRESSURE by the Government, media and public to offer more support for disadvantaged people, who are still intelligent/hard workers. This method is one way they hope to do thiss.

Dont worry, you still are CONSIDERED FOR SEAS, and this cna boost ur ENETR a little as well, so tis like the same effect as those who fall under Cat. 5/6, who have the requirement ENETR LOWERED.
