professional accountancy at RMIT is 4 years with the third year being a paid program based learning thing where you work for an accounting firm. RMIT is close to my house. ENTER: 85 although i've already been offered a place.

Accounting at Monash. It is for 3 or 4 years i think and it doesn't have the program based learning thing but has more prestige than rmit. IS EXPERIENCE BETTER THAN PRESTIGE? ENTER: 91ish at clayton and 82 at caulfield. it is fairly far from me.

commerce at melbourne uni. uncertain of whether it will get me into honour of post grad accounting but is close to my house and has high prstige. ENTER 95.xx

which one would be better if i wanted to become an accountant?

Well I'd go with Commerce at UoM for a few reasons. If you do a straight accounting course you might not be able to take studies in other commerce areas. If you did a commerce course how ever you could do a double major in Accounting and another specialisation of your choice. My thinking here is that you would be more 'marketable' as you have studies in other areas. Also, what happens if you change you mind and don't won't to be an accountant. If you are doing a straight accounting course this could be an issue.

If you have the marks to get into UoM I would go there too. It does as you said have more prestige and I'm guessing the quality of edu. would be better.

Are you super sure you want to do accounting?

You can still acquire real work experience whilst completing a degree at Mnash

Firms everywhere are keen to inject young enthusiastic talent into their workplaces, so there's plenty of opportunities to gain experience even if its not structured via your uni etc.

And you spoke about completing post graduate accounting study.

The only extra study worth completing for accountants is CPA/CA from what i understand anyway.

Acc at Monash is 3 years btw.

I'd recommend monash, but i'd also recommend trying really hard to secure a job in the industry during your undergraduate study years, it'll really help to put you ahead of the pack 4 the future.

I don't really know much about RMIT but you said that you lived pretty far from Monash. If you are certain on just doing a straight accounting 3 year course then I'd probably go with RMIT because it's close to  home.

I wouldn't be doing that if I was in your situation though. I'd rather go do the Commerce course were there is more opportunity to work in a different industry instead of accounting. If I really liked accounting I would just do it as one of my majors.

Regarding post grad, there is no point doing Uni course post grad but rather enter the industry. Wages for accountants are on the low side, unless like the poster mentioned earlier you are a CA/CPA. I'd be trying to get sponsored for one of these programs while at Uni/ASAP after leaving Uni.
