Q about uni

Just out of curiosity, how long do you have to finish your university degree? Do you have to apply/justify why it's taking longer to complete than normal or do they just have a certain time frame that it must be completed by before you lose your placement?
EG: If you chose a 4-5 year course?

I THINK you have about 8 years of HECS or something, after that you have to pay full fee...
