Melbourne vs Monash

Yup, another one of those threads I'm afraid, but I seek advice on behalf of a friend who's split down the middle and I don't exactly know what to do either.

So he got a high enter, high enough for anything engineering at least. The three courses he has in mind are both Science (Mechanical Systems)and Engineering at Melbourne, or Engineering at Monash (Mechanical).

What do?

Basically I've already outlined that Melbourne has a better international reputation, 2nd best school in the country etc. but Clayton is easier for him to get to, has possibly better resources from an engineering perspective and he wants to make the most of his enter. Any other thoughts?

Another question: If he puts Melbourne first, will he still be eligible for a Monash scholarship (assuming he's accepted, etc.)

Both melbourne and monash are good and i suggest he pick the one that is easier to get to. The disparity between the courses between melbourne and monash are so minor that essentially the extra travel will not be worth it. Does his enter allow him to do a double degree? if it does then i say go to monash

He should still be considered for scholarships from both uni's regardless of preference listing as long as he applied. do you have an idea of how his ENTER went?

He says that a double degree is probably too much work. He already lives about an hour away from Clayton, and doing 2 degrees while working doesn't leave him much time to live, lol.

Really? But how much extra study do you have to put in? Would it be possible to have all of the classes in 3 days, then work 2 days and have weekends half free?

Another question: Is there that much of a benefit of doing a double degree over a single? He's gonna get a job straight out either way, and the only double he can't do is eng/law (he hates law anyways)

A double degree just takes longer to complete than a single one, as you need to amount more credit points. I doubt he will be able to have uni only 3 days a week, engineering and science tend to have lots of contact hours.

How much is the Eng scholarship? And I just read that Melbourne has exchanges available to Carnegie Mellon or Berkeley, and Michigan. Is Monash comparable?

As has been stated, there's really not that much difference between the quality of each Uni, whichever is closer.

Melbourne's reputation is that it's more theoretical and Monash is more practical, which one of these appeals most? Look at the course guides of both unis. hat subjects would he be doing at both? Which seem more interesting?

Ranking isn't really something to worry about. Firstly, it's in Engineering, so he'll get a job regardless and secondly, if he's looking to go international, 'Monash' and 'Melbourne' probably won't mean all that much. MIT means something, 'random Australian university', not so much. If he wants to go on exchange though, then that is worth looking at.

If he doesn't want to do a double degree then he definitely shouldn't. It is the same workload as a normal degree, it just takes longer. Maybe he should think about honours instead (an extra year on the end).

With the scholarship to Monash, I think that sounds better. 1 hour out of Clayton isn't so far to travel also.
