Help:: Statement of marks - WTF :(
« on: December 21, 2009, 06:46:36 pm »
Hi.

I just got my statement of marks for psychology.
and after the exam i went through all my answers with people on this site and also my friend who got full marks for the exam (obtained 50) and it appears that two of the questions in the short answer i got zero for when i'm very very sure i had the right answer.

I called up VCAA just then and they aren't there but im sure they will be unable to help me. What can i do?

For the questions

"
Question 3 Waleed has asked you to recommend a mnemonic technique to help him recall a list of words in order. Using an example, explain how the following list of words could be encoded and retrieved using the Method of Loci.'

Words to remember - chocolate hair elephant beach fingers"

i knew the method of loci perfect of loci perfectly.
i defined it, i gave the three steps of the method with each step using the example in great description. i'm 100% sure i did exactly this. but i got 0/6 (after doubling)

also the question
"Question 18 Parents/guardians and participants were debriefed after this study. Outline two pieces of information that the researcher must give during the debriefing process."

Which i am less sure about, but this was my answer (quoted from the other thread right after the exam)

* clear up any misunderstandings of the experiment and reveal true aim/nature of experiment if necessary.
* ensure no psychological or physiological harm has been done to participants, and remove any negative side

And i was told htis was right by several people and i got 0/4

it appears i have lost 10 marks due to this and i am really upset because these, especially the first, i know i got it right!!!

can anyone verify my answers are correct?

thanks so much

For the first question - did you describe method of Loci in linking the items to places or the like? If so, it'd be correct and you really need to get this inspected. Those 3 marks would possibly boost your study score higher.

For the second question - I'm not sure if your answers are "pieces of info" necessarily. Maybe they were looking for something along the lines, 'if you don't want your results in the study, you can withdraw them' or the like? Or perhaps they wanted you to say that the results of the experiement should be described - was a correlation evident or something like that.

But I think you would have got at least 1 of the 4 marks available, even if it did not fully satisfy the question (I'm not sure sorry), so definitely get your script inspected. I'm planning on doing the same for Chemistry.

yeah for question 3

* defined it
* said how to link to well learnt sequence of locations and used each one with an example on the way to school
* then did retreiving by walking mentally to school to get there using each as retreival cues.

i worded it perfectly, i have no fucking idea...
so completely fucked!!

i just called vcaa and left then a message to call me back.. :(!!! but they so wont be able to help.

I think you're definitely going to have to get those 6 marks back - I don't get how is it wrong?

The other 4 I'm honestly not sure because I can't remember a lot on debriefing anyway. I have wiped the traumatic experiences of VCE out of my mind :)

^ haha yeah good idea.

but a friend just told me (the one who got 50) that what i did was right.

i am so upset, this is really, really upsetting. how could this have happened.

im gonna ask to get it re-marked and my script inspected.
is the former even possible?

I doubt you can get your paper remarked, although I'd like to for one of my subjects

How do you justify that your answer is correct or not?
Will they actually change your study score?

yes, they will recalculate my study score.
since if htey made a mistake, and i got these 10 marks, my score will got up to atleast 45. perhaps higher..
but i have no idea how i got 44 with quite a strong sac ranking, midA+ and a mid-low A+
fuck.

It's also possible that when marking the paper they accidentally skipped that question/page. One of our best english students last year only got around a 28 for English. He got a statement of marks and turned out they only marked 1 of his essays. I'm not sure if he tried to get those extra marks and his score changed but yeah it's something that does happen

How do they know your answer is correct though? They might make up some stupid excuse and say "Oh you didn't mention this" and say thats why its wrong

^ yeah but cambie, i know my wording was close to perfect, because i had my entire study book memorised without any single slightly change. there's no way i would have worded it wrong on just that day.

and kenghung - the remarker has to follow an assessment report i'm quite sure, so they will go by that to ensure that it is right/wrong by that standard
