ask a cannibal

this holidays my family and I are taking a trip to India.

last time I went, we met a few "Aghori Hindu's"

they are cannibals. they are basically devotees of the hindu god of death and destruction. they were ascetics who begged in bowl of an animal skull. he was naked and covered in the ashes. the ashes were probably those of a human. Apparently, they pray upon decaying corpses (which is reffered to in the wikipedia article).

they are scary. one basically had a someone's skin flayed over his own like clothing. a human body. that was scary.

wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aghori

"

We're going to the area again and are likely to see others or them again.

If you give me your questions I'll ask them and post the answers.

be serious and respectful. for our family this is perfectly safe. for those that do not know, policing is very differant in India. we are not informing the police. they are from semi-tribal/tribal areas and will not understant alot about modern society.

this is serious business.

things may not work out and I might come back with no results, only paraphrasing, anecdotes or, if you're lucky, a full transcript of questions and answers.

no guarrantees.

Have they eaten someone's liver with a nice chianti? Sorry but this brings to mind Hannibal Lecture

Real questions:

- Do they prey on tourists?
- Whereabout in India are they located? If I go to India I want to know which parts to avoid.
- Why do they eat humans?
- Why are you going to that area?
- Why is your family safe?
- Are you an Aghori?

- Is human flesh tastier than common meats?
- If you left the sect would you still eat human meat?
- Do you ever feel guilty for eating another human?
- Has anyone gotten sick eating a body that already started to decompose?
- Is eating human a highlight of the sect?
- Do you have the answer to world hunger? (ok maybe that one wasn't serious :P)

Also, shouldn't this be in Other General Discussions or something?

Yeah, but to a certain degree it is education. Maybe put it in geography.

I intended this to be a set of questions I could ask the Aghoris themselves, rather than me giving information on them.
but ok, only for these posts that have been posted already.

refer to wikipedia for all other answers (I ceebs)
our family is safe because in the caste system its a terrible sin to harm my the type of person we are born as. they are devote hindus and follow that system this isn't something you talk about. we are going there because I wanted to visit rural areas to get a better picture of rural india. my parents were born in india. relatives took me there and have said they'll take me again. i'm not an aghori. i don't think they prey on tourists, they seemed to try and stay out of everyone's way. they probably eat other aghoris.

it's more reverance for death than the eating of humans that's the highlight of the sect. so cannibalisms a subset of that reverance. i'll pass your questions on.

that doesn't matter.
it's just because they're devote hindus and under the caste system my family have privellages which they shouldn't have (or everyone should have)

According to wiki they only eat dead corpses left on rivers. As long as your meat is being used by a soul as a host body you are fine (depending on accuracy of the article of course). :)

kyzoo,

you don't seem to understand.

this is not just social class, this is religious class.

Aghoris eat people, wear their skin like clothes, then sit on their decaying corpses like stools. They do this for religion.

following a simple observance that i'm really not comfortable discussing and didn't want to be the content of this thread is something they will not question.

i understand it's hard for others to understand, but there is just about NO threat to us at all. I won't be answering any more questions on this sort of thing.

Seriously dude if you are going to put something on the net, you have to be able to take the scrutiny.

I know that you guys have a caste (I.e. What social level you are born into you die at). But what you are saying seems analogous to someone saying "I'm higher up than a shark, so if I literally go up to it, it can't kill me". Like I mean would you walk up to a mass murder on the street?

This is just absurd. So people will scrutinize it.

you have a perfectly valid point. sorry, i wasn't trying to come across the way it might have sounded. I don't like the caste system and for that reason i'm not comfortable talking about it. but i'll ellaborate then

but aghori canibals CHOOSE to do what they do. They do it out of religious devotation. another aspect of hinduism is to follow the class system. If they are willing to go this far for their beliefs, their very, very unlikely to break it for another, much simpler religious observance.

And, as Zachcharge said, they (may) take already dead bodies on river beds. Alot of indians dump dead body's in water so this is very likely. therefore, its even less likely that they're going to kill. After all, murder is as much immoral to them as we do.

its really not fair to compare these guys to mass murderers or sharks. they are not immoral. they are not 'evil'. cannibalism ight be considered 'evil'. To most people in the area, they are revered for goodness as much as your local priest would be. It is completeely acceptable for them to eat dead bodies (and once you get over the eww part and the unhygenic/diseased part, incredibly practical).

this thread to is too much effort to sustain. I'm not going to lock it (don't know if i can?) or reply anymore other than when i get responses to Zachcharge and Quantum's questions.

i'll give you a terrible analogy. think about halo. If there was some splinter cult of the covanent that decided they were going eat the dead bodies of their fallen grunt comrades so that they could please their forerunner pseudo gods, would you have any reason to suspect them to be dangerous to a prophet?

amirite?

I thought the idea of an analogy was to make the message more accessible to a wider audience.

- Hello, i work for mcdonalds and we're designing a new burger, would you like to enter into a partnership?

- I guess i would want to see what *they* think everybody else thinks of them as compared to what everyone else does actually think of them
- If theyve done it since birth or changed into the sect
- If they had children would they also make them become part of it
