Best Uni for medicine in Australia?

What is the best University in Aus for a Medical Degree?  By best I mean the most internationally recognized, as I hope to move overseas one day.
Also I wan't to specialize in Anaesthesiology, so are there any Uni's which I may be better suited to?
And finally, is are entrance requirements the same everywhere?  (i.e. ATAR, UMAT and interview are used to consider entry?)

I don't think it actually matters that much, unless you want to do medical research. At any medical school in Australia you're pretty much guaranteed a job. The current med students should be able to give you a better insight, but anywhere you can get into is good.

Actually in a couple of years (can't remember the exact year) there will be an overload of doctors due to the increase in med school places, and not enough intern spots.
Preference is given to CSP med students, compared to full-fee med students.
This will make it difficult for international students & graduates from Bond Uni (all FFP) to get an intern place moreso then CSP students.

And stonecold, if you want to know the top med school in Aus, you can look at ranking sites (which aren't all that accurate) which generally say the group of 8 are the top unis for med. But that's not to say that Uni of Tas or other schools aren't good. since they are. to get into med anywhere is a very good achievement and since they all pass the same accreditation, all med schools are somewhat equal.

example of rankings:
13. uni of melb
15. uni of sydney
21. ANU
(all the above are grad med though)
25. monash (first undergrad)
28. UQ (provisional entry perhaps?)
ect.

Thanks vexx.

Also can someone tell me the difference between biomed degree and mbbs?
Which one is better to gain entry into the AUS & NZ college of anesthetists?

MBBS is a professional degree that leads directly into working towards accreditation as a medical doctor. A BBiomed is a science degree in the health science, that leads into the health profession with further study.

You will be required to have an MBBS or post-graduate equivalent (e.g. MD) in order to be admitted into the College of Anaesthetists.

Thanks Mark.  Monash it is I guess.

Why do the University of Sydney/Melbourne not allow undergraduate MBBS study?
Also which other Uni's in AUS other than Monash allow undergraduate entry into MBBS immediately after high school?

Stonecold.
There are a bunch of universities that are graduate only, and it is possible to do Provisional Entry, where you are garenteed into the course, for example UQ's provsional entry requiring to do quite well in the UMAT, and then ENTER 99.00, you will be garenteed a spot in the MBBS graduate after a shortened 2 year bachelor's degree.

I suggest you go to medstudentsonline.com.au and click on the wiki to see a list of the undergrad uni's, there is quite a few and all are quite difficult to get into.

Thanks vexx,

Site down atm, but i'll definitely check it out.

Okay so does this sound right to most:
-Undergraduate MBBS (5 years)  or  Bachelor Sc/BioMed then MBBS (7 years)
-Internship (1 year)
-Aus & NZ College of Anesthetists (7 years)

So I'm up for at least 13 years.  Man that is a long time, but it'll be worth it.  :)

^ yep that's pretty much it.
or undergrad MBBS is sometimes 6 years (ex. UNSW)

usually, people have an idea of what they want to do before they begin, and it hardly ever stays the same by the end of a degree haha. a common one i've heard of, is people wanting to be surgeons, ending up GP's.
don't go into med thinking your wanting to do this, as it will probs change, you do rotate around a lot of specialities so you'll find one you most like. who knows, you may still want to be the same.

edit, yeah odd the link isn't working hmmm.
i've done a ridiculous amount of research on all unis, and i'm applying for UQ provisional entry & UNSW as interstate undergrad uni's only, none of the others i'm too keen on. so search around, some may take your fancy, others won't.

haha same, next year will be a massive drag, but I can't wait for Uni.  :D
o0o0o0o....I am curious, what times is it at RMIT?

You haven't heard half of what goes on at RMIT.  The examiners they hire are complete morons.  The old bitch is the worst.  Apparently the English students got 5 mins taken from their exam, and she wouldn't let us take our exam 1 booklets from the further exam, even though the booklet clearly states "At the end of this examination, students may keep this booklet."

Just don't get distracted and stick to your guns and everything will be okay.  :)
