rest&travel for a year before uni?
« on: December 31, 2009, 03:34:39 pm »
my parents are really supportive as they wanna spend more time(1 year going everywhere) with me before i become "busy", and i am feeling the same as well...

but i am still very undecided due to many questions/worries:
1, will i still be able to catch up with uni when i have forgotten most of my VCE stuff?
2, will my enter still be valid 1 year later?
3, will the monash scholarship still be available?
4, can i change my course preferences or even still apply for interstate?

 :-\ ...
well the limit can turn into a threshold..

Except number 3, the answer to all those questions are a definite 'yes'. For 3, you'd have to contact Monash, although I imagine that they will probably allow you to defer your scholarship. Taking a gap year (or even just a gap 6 months) is the best thing for you if you think you need a break and you don't feel the need to rush into starting uni. I would have taken one, but I really just wanted to get stuck into uni straight away so I didn't. It also gives you a good opportunity to decide what you want to do if you're unsure, and to spend time with your family that you probably won't have the time to do later on. Another option is that you can start next year and then take a leave of absence down the track if you'd like to take time off. I guess one danger of a gap year is that you might never go back to uni at all, but I somehow doubt that would happen to you.

For number 4, you cannot change your course preferences via VTAC now.  You will have to wait until January 18th to see which 1st round offer you get and if you are unhappy with it, then you can apply for an Irregular Offer.

After that, I the offer time period, I think the only way possible to change your course is to transfer to another course after you have started uni.

You can still apply for a course that wan't on your list of preferences, or for a course that is lower on your list than the one you've been offered. To do this you need to put in an irregular offer.

Before you do, you should contact the course administrators to discuss your chances of being offered a place in that course. You may have to visit them in person. You should also make sure that you have a high enough ENTER to get into that course, and that you meet all other prerequisites, too

Basically you should apply for an Irregular Offer if you:

1.  Have received an offer but are not satisfied with it and want a preference that is lower on your list.
2.  Want to apply for a course that was not on your list of preferences.

If you do apply for an Irregular Offer, please take this important note:

"You forfeit the right to be considered for any other offers through VTAC for the remainder of the selection period."

You can make an Irregular Offer only after Round 1 and you are strongly recommended to contact the selection officer(s) for the course you are applying for to see if you stand any chances of receiving an offer.

It is risky, that's why you are strongly recommended to contact the selection officer(s) before you apply.  Also, there are restrictions:

  • If you are an international student, then you are not eligible.
  • If you have listed only undergraduate courses in your preferences, then you are not allowed to seek an irregular offer for Graduate Entry Teaching courses.
  • If you have only listed Graduate Entry Teaching courses in your preferences, then you are not allowed to seek an irregular offer for undergraduate courses.

When contacting the selection officer(s), make sure that you ask them how many places are still available and if they are willing to make you an offer.

And also, most importantly of all, make sure you meet all the pre-requisites including any extra requirements.

for most scholarships @ monash, they are deferrable. so that is a conditional yes for number 3.

i spoke with one of the guys for head of health sciences, med n nursing @ monash. he told me to take a year off, so that next year, when he finished his new system, i will get a chance into med >.>

1.) I know people who take a gap year and can still catch up with the content. The start of most subjects are revising the VCE stuff, adding to it and really just changing how you look at something.

I would say 2 & 4 go under the same category. I'm sure your ENTER is still valid after a year and you can always defer your degree for a year.

As for 3, I'm not too sure about that since there are heaps of students that want a scholarship.

You have to remember that a uni semester is between 13-16 weeks long, so at max you will be at uni for 32 weeks. You get about 2 weeks off during the semester, a month off between semesters and 3 and half months off during christmas.

I have also heard stories about people who take GAP years and never go back to uni. One of my friends was overseas for ages (during the whole year 12 break) and when he came back to go to uni he was confused and decided to defer, I hope he goes to uni this year.
