I'm doing Cosi (I still need to buy/read it). All I know is there's a director in a mental hospital and it's sarcastic. It actually freaks me out how perfect this actually is considering this story seems like something straight out of my head.

I've read half of Year of Wonders, and personally it is quite a bore, as I kept drifting my mind elsewhere when nothing interesting was happing or a person would describe something for 2 or so pages.. This is probably why I enjoyed reading The Crucible, as something was happening every line.

The only parts of the Year of Wonders I remember is how everyone died and the chapter where Anys was being thrown into the ditch of water to test whether she was a witch or not.

I've heard lots of people saying 'I love this book, It is amazing!', but I haven't seem to have found anything 'amazing' out of it. It's probably because the book slightly focuses on 'boys' and cute children.

If anyone has any Cosi notes, themes or essay topics, could you please share them here.
They seem to be pretty scarce.

This is all I could find so far:

Themes
* Love and Fidelity (The different opinions that the characters have about love and relationships), use quotes from Doug and contrast them against the opinions of another character.
* The negative treatment of mental patients in Australia (The burnt out theatre symbolises the poor treatment of the mental patients).etc
* Madness vs Sanity (Are the characters really insane or is that just how the public perceives them?)

Techniques to show the themes include:
*Dialogue (Shows the characters feelings and raises the themes)
*Setting
*Play within a play structure
*Actions of the characters
* Lighting and how it reflects the feelings of the characters

Other tips
*To understand this text properly, it helps to understand the context in which it was set: 1970s Australia.
*Research and read. The political landscape of the time has a large impact on this play: Gough Whitlam was prime minister, the Vietnam War, the Moratoriums (made reference to in the play) and conscription.

I'm doing Cosi! I just got the book today. -_-
It's short and the feedback here is pretty positive so I'll probably finish it later when I'm not feeling so lazy.

Years of Wonders. i loved the Novel, somehow i found it overwhelming.

There is a study Guide out their, published by "Top Notes" <-- You'd find in A&G. Not too sure of other companies such as NEAP/INSIGHT however you can download a free article of YOW ( Which is pretty much like a study Guide anyway, contains essay Q's and such) www.englishforyear12.com.au

thank you so much souljette.  that website is awesome, and the study guides are very in depth.

i'll start reading the book in the next day or two.  :)

stonecold thanks for the themes +1

i'm not really too sure about patriotism, as it doesn't really come up in the book.  it does however tie in with the views of nick and lucy, as they are against the war in vietnam.

i think that we will be writing more about the themes i posted because they have more to do with the central character, being lewis.

It is important to have a good background of the politics and war at the time though, as you may be asked to compare the outlooks of lewis with either lucy or nick in an essay.
