hmm i think i have a problem. i cant study for more then 2 hours a day (holidays), and reading through some of these threads some ppl are like doing 5 hours plus ( on normal school nights). i dont know, i think i cant seem to keep myself awake sometimes.
on good days 2 hours would be max...
how long should i study for? and what could we do to last longer?  ;)

thanks in advance

Depends on the person. It's not how long you study for but how effectively you do it. ( EG: spending 3-4 hours staring at one question is pointless).

My teachers recommended 4 hours/night during a school day.

I recommend 5 hours of study each day during VCE. If you're doing any less, you're not trying...

I disagree. The amount of study should reflect your own abilities and learning styles. I probably didn't do much more than an hour or two a night, with a bit more on the weekend.

I think I would actuall go crazy if I tried to study 5 hours a day.

My maximum during term was usually around 3 hours in year 11, and that was only when I had an English Language SAC the next day and I was trying to quickly memorise a bunch of quotes/linguistic terms. Most of the time it was between 0 and 1 hour. I'll probably end up working a lot in my frees this year, so that I can have some time at home to relax.

Just study the maximum amount you can each day that you can be consistent with throughout the year. Most people only do VCE once, so it pays to do it right.

Agreed. Although with year 12 come a lot of opportunities, and I think it's important to seize them in conjunction with attempting to achieve high marks.

I agree with you.
There's no need to do hours each day, its possible to do really well with just minor homework. with just studying quite a few hours before sacs and then the exam.

yes, but everyone's different so I don't think you should assume what works for you may work for everyone. The truth is everyone's doing different subjects so everyone will have different study requirements to get a specific ENTER/ATAR. It's also apparent that not everyone will be getting 99.95, though studying a few hours a day will get you awfully close.

I am also aware that there may be people out there who can pull an awfully high ENTER/ATAR with only 1-2 hours a day but you'd want to feel as though you've given it your best.

this is true.
however, if you find a way to use your time efficiently, you can reduce a lot of study time.
i didn't mean 99.95 high, i meant 97-98 range, which i'm sure some could reach will much, much less study in comparison with someone aiming for 99.50+
if i was aiming for 99.95, i would be doing a ridiculous amount of study, but considering i'm not as i don't think it's actually possible, i won't be trying THAT hard. heh :P

Pfft. No offence, but I dont think you can preach this sort of intensity when you get a study score of 31 for bio and its the only 3-4 you were doing for the year. Unless you only had the capacity to get a 20 with little study.

I dont think you need to set a time of how long youll be sitting at your desk for. You need to set a reasonable amount of work for yourself and stop when youve completed it all.

I wasn't as committed last year as I am now. And yes, there was a lot of time that I wasted that I could have spent studying more. I got really complacent and lazy with bio, especially during unit 4 after a dissappointing mid-year result. I could have spent more time doing practice exams instead of mucking around with friends and procrastinating. All I am trying to do is give my best advice through the mistakes that I've made in the past. If it's anyone's opinion that matter's it would be from someone who's made the most mistakes and learnt the most from them.

On average I plan to complete between 30 and 90 minutes on a normal school night. Though these are only a guide and on the actual night I will not think 'I must do an hour and a half', rather I will set task objectives rather than time objectives. For example, 'I must work through and understand/revise this chapter'. This is because I find that time aims often lead to procrastination.

Well its good to see that youve come to your senses. So have I over these holidays.
5 hours a night is excessive. Sure you should be prepared to spend more than that on a particular night but 5 hours for the WHOLE year.. not many could keep up with that. Some people may fall off the bandwagon after a month and become so disillusioned, thinking they dont deserve a good ENTER score, so they stop trying.
