Just wondering if there are any atheist-centered clubs. I'd check on the site myself, but for some reason I can't view any of the pages (http://www.monashclubs.org/).

Perhaps it's time someone started one? What are the chances of attracting some members?

You should make one worshipping the flying spaghetti monster... that way your club won't be the odd one out.

The one at melbourne uni seems quite well populated so that could be a good indicator of the likelihood of attracting members.

If I go to Monash, that makes at least two prospective members haha. I think though there would have to be some interesting discussions/invited speakers or something to encourage people to come. All the atheists I know tend to not be "group-y" kind of people. Perhaps this explains why although about 25% of Australians are atheist (recent Age article) we so rarely hear about them!

I can't really imagine how an athiest club would work.

Christian club: Sit around and talk about jesus
Read the bible
Sing songs
ect

Athiest Club: Sit in akward silence

The clubs would talk about what they believe in, which for the athiest club is..nothing?

I just dont see how itd be a lively kind of club or if theres some christian bashing going on, itd only be athiests bashing each others opinions on the same thing lol.

Maybe an overall bigger club like a rationalists or skeptics club or something. Still same lack of attractiveness applies.

A poker club sounds awesome too.

I guess atheist clubs could discuss how to lead a full life without god. But yeah, the name 'atheist' kinda invites religion bashing anyway.
Rationalist and skeptics society might be better choices for a non-aggressive society, although skeptic has a negative connotation, and rationalist sounds kinda boring.
Perhaps a better name could be the League of Reason, or perhaps "PEARList society"

What about "Humanist Society"? I know it doesn't directly imply "atheist", but to my thinking, the term does posit humanity as being more important than, um, certain supernatural/imaginary friends. "Secular Humanist Society" might be more appropriate.

+ 1. I also find that a lot of atheists have a vested interest in espousing rational thinking, limiting religious influence in public and political life, and strengthening upper-level education in the natural sciences and social sciences. These would all be interesting topics for discussion.

It might just be me, but surprisingly I'm not much of a Christian-basher. The basic tenets of Xtianity are too strange for me to critique objectively. I think "positive promotion" (i.e. promoting rational thinking rather than explicitly bashing Xtianity) is more effective.

On the mahjong thing: given that Monash is totally Azn, i think it could be successful. Does anyone know what do you have to do to start a club? Write a proposal or something?

The clubs can only attract members when there's someone that has really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like.
