some questions regarding offers
« on: January 20, 2010, 11:02:09 am »
hi guys,

i have a few questions regarding 1st and 2nd round offers, thank you very much in advance, for any clarification.

1, why do universities sometimes offer more (about 20~30) places than what they told their future students previously?

2, are the universities mentioned in 1 likely to offer more positions for their second rounds?

3, if you didn't get your first preference, is there anything else valuable - apart from just waiting and accepting the current one, that you could do to maximise your opportunity for the second round?

4, when you realise that you may also be eligible for another SEAs category and want to strengthen your equity/SEAs base, what should you say to the selection officer in order to pursuade them re-considering your ranking on their list?

5, does a becoming hotter courses have a higher tendency to not offer second rounds despiting its clearly-in is slightly higher than the previous year's - there were 2nd round offers for previous year and was slightly lower.

6, will any more offer be made after 2nd or 3rd rounds for extreme circumstances upon selection officers' permissions?

thanks a lot for any help

1.  It depends on the supply and demand.  The fact is this though:  When you go to Open Day and ask the people there how many places they are offering, they cannot give you a precise number.  They can only give you an approximate.  This is because between the time of Open Day and the end of the year, the university may decide to offer more or less positions.

2.  Depends on the course.  Can't really give you a general answer either.  Once again, the principles of "supply and demand" follow here.  However, this time around, it's more about how many people rejected or deferred.

3.  Accepting your first round offer does not jeopardise your chances of receiving a second round offer.  So long as you did not get your first preference, then you are eligible to receive a higher offer in the subsequent round.

4.  Sorry.  It's too late to do anything now with regards to altering your SEAS application, according to VTAC.  You can try contacting the institution and ask them about it though.

5.  What do you mean by "hotter course"?  You mean popular course?

6.  Firstly, this year there are only two main rounds - first round and second round.  The last "round" is called the "supplementary round" and that works differently.  It only affects you if you haven't received any offers in the previous two rounds.

What course/uni is your first preference?

Chances of getting in strongly depend on what course/uni your first preference is.

For example AFAIK UoM doesn't offer second round to non-SEAS applicants.

As Gloamglozer mentioned it all depends on supply-demand. There's no such thing as "special consideration" beyond SEAS. Best thing to do is call the institution and ask if they're offering/how many spots they're offering/your chances of getting in second round.
Ever tried. Ever Failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better
