Yeah do commerce majoring in finance and economics. You need finance for market movement and economics for movement in the economy.

probebly not, but it seems to be the best

i just did a little research and aparently there is no tertiary education needed, but u need to have a firm take u in order to get qualified (they usually only wanna take those with knowledge in economics/finance tho), then u have to sit exams to become qualified etc

so, either do econ/finance or just be really fcking smart :)

I love that movie!

Also I'm sure you could try getting into stock breaking with a Maths degree majoring in statistics. I wouldn't have mind being stock broker myself but loved pure/applied maths more than statistics.

My uncle dropped out of school in year 10 and after a few years began working at a small firm as a clerk doing the photocopying, filing etc. He was virtually the 'bottom of the mountain'. Over time he worked his way up and is now a stockbroker in a large international corporation, with no teritiary qualifications.

While this is encouraging, times certainly have changed and such a pathway may not be possible anymore.

Ok sorry about that, but in my defence I'm not doing commerce.

Even though it's buying and selling stock, you still need to have a good idea of how the market is moving (yes this can be self taught) so you can make a profit. Anyway for people doing commerce, it couldn't hurt to be knowledgable in economics.

Hi,

What do you mean by "stockbroking"? Do you mean the sale of stocks to retail clients or actually being in ECM (Equity Capital Markets) arranging IPOs and dealing with corporate finance?

For retail broking, any degree will do really. Many people graduate in different degrees, but if you have a passion for the markets, the firm and a basic knowledge of how markets work (like excess demand creates higher prices, some sectors are more volatile than others etc, but they will teach what market cap, P/E, short-selling, chart reading etc). Many graduates in the U.S. have only studied BA and got in easy to stockbroking. But you do need fluent communication skills, able to work in high pressure environments, good numerical skills.

For ECM on the other hand, you usually need a business type degree so in if you planning to work in Australia a BCom will do just fine. It's more complex as you need to deal with models, do bookbuilds (for IPOs) etc. It's more competitive to get into and does require a solid understanding in accounting, maths and indeed economics. However, if you research, network, attend and apply for leadership positions at clubs, get a mid-D (H2A) average, show how you effectively deal in difficult situations you should be good.
