I don't get why in super scaled subjects people sometimes don't get 50? Say for example Latin, the highest mark was 47, which I know scales to 54.4, but still shouldn't the best student get a 50?

No.  It has nothing to do with it being a super scaled subject - it's because it's a ranking.

On Latin though, the rumour at MGS is that the Latin Chief Examiner refuses to give 50s unless the student scores perfect marks on the exam.

Not sure if it's him or not, but Peter Mountford doesn't teach at MGS.

I think a 50 indicates a placing in the top 0.3% (or something) and Latin typically doesn't have enough students such that the mench who leads the cohort automatically gets 50. (If you're top in a subject with 100, for example, it's only known that you've reached the top 1%; whether you get 50 or not must depend on your absolute performance.) It's about numbers, not scaling; Spec maths will always have 50s.

if latin did have a normal study score like the other subjects (all students are ranked and it's possible to get high 40's just if you are a top student) then the whole vce system would be ridiculously unfair haha

so let's be happy it doesnt (even though 50% of the cohort gets like 47 who do latin) .___. hate that.. (i would love if i did it)

I think it's because not many do Latin, and is it treated as a small subject group? Then the study scores are calculated differently than that of normal subjects.
