speaking of learning Kanji, I really dont like my Japanese teacher's approach when it comes to me writing non-prescribed VCE kanji and sometimes having a small stroke or wrong radical, she tells me to just stick to "the VCE kanji so you don't penalize yourself for this"

But it's true XD

That's why VCE Jap sucks =[

(who the hell came up with the idea that 200 Kanji is useful?)

200?!?

Is that all you learn?!??

WTFFFFFF

to noob-it-down even more, it's 150 for writing and 50 for recognition XD

Hence why VCE Japanese is soooooooooooooooooooo shit.

VCAA: "Oh, Kanji is too hard for students. We'll just make them learn the most basic ones like 父 and 母, that's all they'll need" It's pretty easy to see why Australia is a monolingual nation, the curriculum is dumbed down to the max, and year 11/12 LOTE is a waste of time. The most linear and formulaic piece of shit /rant.

@Fyrefly, when you do 5/6 you can laugh at all the VCE non-Chinese kids who can't read Kanji XD

random sidenote: JLPT registration cut offs are coming up realllll soon.

"Applications must be accepted by JSH as of Friday the 27th of August although applications are encouraged to be submitted prior to this date, especially to allow time for incorrectly filled out applications to be returned and re-submitted."

I keep procrastinating filling in the sign up forms ><

btw if you haven't heard, the levels have changed this year. There's now 5 levels, from N1 to N5, N3 being the new level which sits between the old level 2 and 3. I'm going for N2 because I study harder when the chance of failing is epic.

Yeah, I've known about the changes for a while... I think it's better... I don't know whether I should go for N4 or N3 though... I think I could pass N4 quite easily but N3 could still be a little bit out of reach... hmm...

woaaaah *has officially learnt 凹 and 凸* speaking of which, I haven't used the words "convex/concave" since yr 10 science when we were talkin' about eyebawlz :D

anyway, I actually decided to make fun of my own nervousness for the topic of my speech which is Japanese Onomatopoeia and Phenomines
(擬音語と擬態語) by giving an example of the definition

"たとえば、私は今このスピーチを話している時にきんちょういるので、私の足がガクガクして、体がフラフラして います。"

The funny thing is, that's probably what will be happening as im saying that lolol :(

lulz for slight off-topic-ness

I would say このスピーチをしながら、きんちょうしているので、rararara.
Saying 'when' is way too trans-literal, whereas 'while' sounds a lot better don't you agree?

I've been told that learning languages is a great way to prevent Alzheimer's disease when you get older. It makes you seem more of an attractive person and increases your job prospects and ability to make friends. And, after watching some anime and other weird stuff on youtube, I've gotten this urge to learn Japanese all of the sudden and just be immersed with its culture. I don't think I'll do it for VCE, I'm a bit late for that but maybe some time in the future, just for fun. So, here's my question, how long does it take to learn fluent Japanese for an adult?

What about other languages? Is the amount of time taken roughly the same?
As someone trying to become fluent in Hebrew through VCE, and raised in a monolingual house, I can tell you that the degree to which you master a second language is entirely dependent on two things:

1) the amount of work that you put in. If you're willing to write 3-5 essays a week, rewrite essay (really important for developing proper grammar and syntax), read articles online, listen to music in that language, and find people to converse with (in my case, random Israeli backpackers on Carlisle), then your language skills should improve in due course.

2) the teacher you have. Don't underestimate this point. A passionate teacher can really instill a love for the language, the culture and your extended topic. A teacher that you dislike, or doesn't teach well can be a major turn off (true for any subject).

Ultimately, VCE success in LOTE is a mixture of many variables. Of course, if your passionate about mastering your said language, then you'll become fluent eventually, whether during, or after VCE.
