Explain how a mission statement can help an organisation achieve it's objectives?

I'm think because mission statements provide guidance to staff and employees and can help them when making decisions?

This is how all the questions are...

I think a mission statement is a clear compilation of the reasons why they exist. This will help high level management have a clear view of what the the company wants to achieve, and acceptable pathways to bring about these objectives. I've pretty much forgotten all of BM, if this is way off let me know.

^well that sucks.  IMO that doesn't really have anything to do with business management.  more of a marketing spin.

The mission statement formally expresses the reasons for an organisation's existence, its purpose and its method of operation. Fundamentally organisations develop objectives using their mission statement as a guide. An objective gives an organisation direction, that is, it provides the organisation with a path to follow, increasing its chances of being successful.

Some reasons:
- Money used to sell off the government enterprise can be used to pay off government debt.
- Privatised enterprises are likely to be more efficient as they pursue profit.
- Government control can prevent the orgs from branching out and expanding due to lack of profit.

Also, on that last point, Government organisations are generally more conservative, they adopt safer strategies, this is because they don't have exorbitant capital as well and they are financed by the public(taxpayers money), as such they have a responsibility to use every cent wisely.
